Ethiopia is exposed

Wasn’t she the queen that the king of adal and Abyssinia fought a duel over?

I don't know , the first time i actually heard of her. I doubt they would fight a duel over a single women, that seems like some medieval European practice. She must have been really important if they did.

I have known for years that Ethiopia's agricultural data is bullshit. Anyone who knows anything about agricultural transformation could see that Ethiopia had not implemented the best practices of the Green Revolution.

Ethiopia is a city-state with a desperately poor periphery. Ethiopia outside of Addis is probably poorer than Somalia.

Ok so for the last 5+ years they been lying on data and bolsting and continue to get loans and projects what’s gonna happen?

they’re just going to continue to get loans or is there going to be an economic implosion?

Remote sensing and AI have made it easier than ever to find out what has been planted and what the expected yield is. CME futures traders have developed these methods to speculate on food prices. If USDA says Ethiopia is lying, then it is lying.

Their growth rates have been inflated for decades.
The IMF did a massive downward revision of their GDP in the October 2024 WEO. This was probably a condition of Ethiopia getting the $3.4 billion loan in July of this year. Some of it is likely to be due to the devaluation of the Birr.

GDP figures for 2025 have been revised down~50%! Crazy

Damn that’s crazy. Whats going to material occur then in Ethiopia? Great depression? worse economic conditions?

I think the Aid organizations like USDA have a vested interest in knowing the real food production capacities of the country since they were the ones supplying the country with food amidst of famine and food shortages.

But you are right, it's surprising nonetheless that an American mainstream news outlet like the Economist is covering this.
How’s Somalia doing in HDI compared to Ethiopia? I can’t seem find any accurate up to date figures on our HDI

Can you even claim to even have a middle class when the highest positions in your society earn abysmal wages? It's not only just everyday people pickpocketing and begging, but also service providers and government officials kidnap or extort people to squeeze them out of money because they don't get payed enough or even in time.

University professors are among the highest paid professionals in most countries and they earn 100 dollars a month this is lower than factory workers in other countries.

This personal story of an ethiopian university lecturer shows how bleak opportunities are in their country and proves your point above

People with Engineering degrees which are usually high in demand in most places become shoe shiners. That shows how bleak the situation is.

In Somalia many people are turning to engineering, technical/vocational education in higher numbers because it's seen as proven path towards employment.

Posts where i responded to @Ximan iyo Xadeed glacing of Ethiopia. It really set's into context Ethiopia's situation

Ethiopia is poor

But they offer their citizens

Free education
Low electricity and water bills
Welfare for the poor

What does Somalia offer its citizens?

Many of Ethiopia’s services are low quality education is underfunded, power outages are frequent, and welfare is limited.

Ethiopians also receive no jobs after graduation so people flee the country. Whereas in Somalia they invested money into creating companies, firms etc, and created job placement schemes for graduates and youth that leave the private technical and university schools. Ethiopia’s government controls most industries, limiting private sector growth. Ethiopians are still poor despite these government policies because the system does not create wealth.

Low water bills is the most laughable. They don't even receive water and suffer from water shortages.
View attachment 356266
If it's this bad in Addis, then you know its worse everywhere else

Every time Ethiopian's go back to Addis it's struggle no water, electricity and they get robbed in broad daylight

"It's not like an insane concept. In Ethiopia you can pay your electricity on time, all the time. The electricity can just dissappear just like that"
The problem is that if the government is broke and non-functional it simply wont provide the services it promises , so saying there is free education, low whatevver, but what does that matter when schools are closing, teachers and faculty don't get payed, they have no materials and the private sector is non-existent (no employment opportunities), water scarcity, power/electricity shortages etc.

I rather have services i pay for that delivers for me than services i don't pay for but don't deliver and deliver terrible quality as well.

It goes to show you that Somalis unlike Ethiopia don't wait for government handouts , they create their own wealth. Somalis don't wait for the government to provide them with services they build their own schools, universities, and hospitals.

A system that provides "free" services but keeps people poor is NOT a successful model.

Check this out as well they just did this recently.

Its weird how they just keep pumping out these vanity projects while deluding themselves into believing its "Progress" and its even worse that they just import foreign expertise to do these useless projects, there is zero local involvement at all they even stated on that thread that drone show was carried out by a singaporean company.

The amount of money they spend on this stuff could have been used for much more useful things that actually benefits the populace but I guess they arent ready for that.

somalia is kinda expensive and the salaries are fairly high for african standards. i think it will be one of the highest if you exclude the oil countries (algeria equatorial guinea etc) and the touristy countries (morocco south africa etc) of africa. in somalia a cleaner can earn 250 dollars a month in a provincial capital. that is relatively high. look at salaries for professionals like doctors their salaries are high and compete with the oil and touristy countries.

This is a bad thing though, its in the best interest of ethiopia's neighbors that their false reports are believed and no positive changes are made.

If ethiopia actually fixes itsself then its a big problem for east africa, especially for eritrea and somalia.

The key part of Ethiopia “fixing itself” depends on it changing its attitude toward its neighbors and dismantling its outdated feudal-style structure. That hasn’t happened largely because it’s still being propped up and enabled by certain Western and European actors.

But let’s be real, conflict in any part of the Horn benefits no one. Ethiopia gained absolutely nothing from destabilizing Somalia or keeping Eritrea diplomatically isolated and in a military stalemate.

And likewise, Somalia or Eritrea wouldn’t benefit from Ethiopia being poor, unstable, or in chaos either. Regional development and peace are interlinked.

I disagree, ethiopia being a chaos directly benefits somalia for 3 key reasons:

1) ethiopians have made it clear they want somalia's coast acccess, them being in chaos prevents an attack before it starts

2) ethiopia being in chaos makes regaining ogaden possible, if they are not in chaos not only would that require a war, but the international community has a proven agenda against muslims so somalia would face a coalition like in the 2nd ogaden war. If ethiopia is in chaos a strong somalia could feasibly get a peaceful secession of ogaden, and possibly balkanize ethiopia like yugoslavia if they fund oromo and tigrayan separatist movements.

3) ethiopia being in chaos means that they are more open to foreign investment, so somalis can then invest in ethiopia as well as bribe officials if somalia gets back on track. Its like how rawanda is tiny yet uses money and influence to control a large percentage of the congo.

If somalia is in a decent state its only benefits.

Thanks. Have u sent the inbox?

Is the HDI for galbeed really that low? Also I never knew the gambella region was doing way better than the other regions good for them

I will send you it, sry i got a little busy with projects. Those HDI figure are completely unreliable , especially for Addis.

There is no way a city described like this has an HDI index of 700.

Imagine if they spent that money to create proper homes for the poor and food banks. This is why i say that PR management that they do doesn't benefit them in the real sense.

They even deny local people water, this shows you how these vanity projects deprive people of resources.

Watch this video, this is the most glaring thing that shows the dissonance and disconnect between the vanity project called Bole road and actual development . He says it looks organized , clean and developed but he is immediately hit with the opposite reality when there is a kid begging him for money and another begging him for food.

The theft and widespread pick pocketing he talks about in the beginning is linked to this desperation.

You see people in the Ethiopian subreddit talk about it a lot

May ALLAH (SWT) increase such issues until the people of that land are righteous!

They abuse people and now they suffer their own evil!
