Like @sophisticate tried to say this is only a recent addition to our culture.Majority of somalis back then were dark and mariin in colour and the ideal woman and what was attractive back then was definetly not lighter skin because somalis are one of the few people who didn't put lighter skinned people on a pedestal as u can see with the reer xamar and the barawa people of somalia.
Even today although a tiny bit of colourism has encrouched in our culture, features are more of the deciding factor when we are talking about attraction in the Somali community.

Don't Somalis talk shit about everyone, though ? I guess I'm medium, but I like medium reddish brown skin the most. It compliments my black lips. Alot of light skinned black girls look like a Simpson character or remind of a yellow lab.I think colorism is worse with a lot of Latino, ADOS and Islanders. Also couldn't the light skin be like to mean you don't have to go outside because you have servants or dark skin could be seen as working in a manual labor type job ? And on average cushitic people are lighter than other African besides Berber people, so maybe it's not look like or confused with Bantus. Or that you can't afford the right garments to protect yourself from the sun. That's my guess.

Somalis of all shades are beautiful, and should be told this from a young age. Especially little girls, sadly a more European features gets more compliments hence the skin being lighter is praised this may be the colonial mentality or wanting to resemble more like Arabs. What I dislike though is someone saying I dont look Somali and thinking I will take it as a compliment. I've also heard this from Somalis which is weird. Claiming I must be mixed like what? People are too obsessed with getting lighter skin than a lighter/purer heart smh.

I have the same akin tone as you. My family who are by far majority light skin, don't care about skin color at all. We forces more on facial features, heigene, and personality. That's why I'm finding this whole thread extremely odd. Maybe I'm just isolated from other Somali families? Cause I have never seen any Somali care about skin color.
