What a garbage thread

There isn't a day that goes by without s making fools of themselves on the internet. Diraac isn't exclusively ours. Use this energy on something else

What is garbage is your thought process and your self-hate. You think insulting Somalis makes you less Somali? Or do you think allowing non-Somalis to appropriate our clothes makes you more respectable. Go take your nonsense to another topic.

Its's actually funny to see Somalis fighting over something that is traditionally Yemeni and brough to East African culture via Benadiris

But I agree, they shouldn't be profiting from it at all. Theres no correlation in central and west Africa.

Benadiris brought it but Somalis made it into an entire industry. If we let this slide, tomorrow they will steal our guntiino, sadex qayd and beads.

Most modern west/central African clothing was brought to them by the white man from places like Indonesia and turkey. At least for somalis, it was through trade with neighbors. Just go look at pre colonial photos and you'll notice they dress nothing like they do today.

I saw this. I’m not surprised. It’s blatant cultural appropriation. These non Somali Africans have so much hatred towards us, yet want to emulate our style. It’s a tacky imitation; the Somali Dirac is very subtle and exudes class. I uno what this crap is.

Btw I hope you guys know Dirac is from the benadiri community and their Swahili brother (Kenya, Tanzania, Zanzibar, etc.) call it dira/deera too.

Wrong. Dirac came through Djibouti first. Sorry to break it to you. :drakekidding: Even the custom of wearing a green Dirac during engagements is from Zeila. Keep reaching though. We acknowledge the foreign influences but its not Zanzibari but Yemeni. Nor is it particularly old. Guntino and Sadex Qeyd are truly Somali. Nonetheless the Dirac has become Somali and has been embellished with new and more interesting patterns than its plain earlier versions.

I think the same tbh. The Yemeni one looks bland. Anyway, chai spices are considered Chinese but the Indians are known for their tea. Fish and chips are South American and Jewish but the Brits have it as their national dish. Somalis are known for the Dirac irrespective of its origins. People borrow and adapt food and dress all the time. Its how innovation occurs.

Dirac is a Yemeni dress that Somalis copied.

Dirac only became popular in Somalia during the 1970s.

Imagine hating on other people for something that isn't even ours, Ceeb.

I never seen anyone else wear dirac/baati like Somalis do, I am sure it's not limited to us but let's be honest those designers were influenced by the endless amount of pictures/videos of xaliimos sporting colorful diracs at weddings. They just need to give credit and acknowledge their inspiration :)
