BBC Africa Eye documentary: Somalia, Sexism and Me

Why do online Islamists pretend every organic social justice movement is a nefarious Western plot to upend Islamic culture?

Because Somali girls, especially "feminists", are easily exploitable by those who have bad intentions for Somalis, Islam, and Somalia. No question about the harsh reality of the women back home, and the need to have it changed, but it seems that genuine need can be easily exploitable by the forces who are waging war on Islam.

Folks, who told Somali girls to shake their booties online? This is really embarrassing. It is like they were let out of jail and they recently found their freedom. Disgusting if you ask me.

Someone should have a firm control on Somali girls. I am against rape and any forms of mistreatment. But the moment Somali girls find themselves with so much "freedom", they become out of control. Shaking their booties online, describing men's genitals, etc, their motto in social media is really embarrassing.

The only exception to the rule are the religious ladies.

It seems to me, they're even more exploitable by their own men who should be protecting them, yet non of you ever talk about it unless a woman or the gaals notice it and when they do, all you do is scream 'feminist!'. Its very obvious, that many of you lot are completely fine with what is going on back home and any woman who speaks about her experiences is shut down with 'gaal explotation!', when your own women can't even get justice for rape. Honestly, get out of here.

Funny how a woman talking about her own experiences is exploitation, but if a man was to talk about his experience of poverty and difficulty back home it isn't. Both situations make the country look bad, yet its a woman's honest account of her day and to day life is triggering? Yep clear silencing tactic tbh.

I saw a video of a woman talking about rape back home. Everyone knows this is an issue and some of you sick Abdis were crying about feminism in the comments section. That is when I knew that the blood and dignity of Somali women mean nothing to some of you lot.

I'm glad this woman has the freedom to do what she pleases. She looks great

What does the behavior of a small minority have to do with the mistreatment of Somali women. You're indirectly trying to justify their issues.

Its akin to me posting a video of Somali men behaving bad, in which i could find plenty when we're having a conversation about how difficult things are for men back home.

Like what does a silly girl behaving badly online have to do with the mistreatment of our girls back home? Do you honestly think people are dumb? Its clearly your way of saying, 'if we start to treat them with dignity, then even more will behave disgustingly online'.

If that isn't your intention, then wallahi its really odd why you've decided to talk about this in this thread.

If you want to talk about the problems faced by Somali women back home, you need to talk about it on daily basis, launch a campaign at many levels to change it. Don't go to BBC for publicity stunt and took a picture of your circumcised vagina and show it to the world while blaming it on Somali men.

Be genuine if you want to make a difference back home. Engage with women, clan elders, different authorities, and religious scholars. Be consistent and make sure you want solutions. And spare us with your occasional publicity stunts in Western media where you all do bring is shame.

Lastly, it seems Kay Foster and Halane junta are funding some women groups and highlighting problems women back home when their goal is grabbing Somali natural resources and changing Somalia's Islamic character.

Remember pre civil war, women were to free to wear what they want, work, and dispute domestic abuse in courts. Due to lack of governance, the biggest victims were women. So I dont think Somalis themselves are sexist but the Wahabbi influence combined with lawlessness have severely hampered their rights. Western NGOs of course have a nefarious agenda but these issues need to be addressed by local civil society and government levels (which barely exist).

I think we need to take a middle path and not be on the extremes of both sides, those who think Somali men are mysogonistic monsters and those who think there are no problems whatsoever are both part of the problem

I'm acknowledging the problems faced by women and IDPs (Internally displaced peoples) back home. I have seen it first-hand when I visited back home. I want their situation changed for the better.

I believe solutions lie within Somalis. Some can be done at clan elders and women groups. Some can be changed by having stable central and regional governments. And some can be fixed by educating the youth. This is an enormous effort that requires genuine people who are doing it for the sake of Allah (swt).

Definitely, women who go to kuffar media and who work with Allah's enemies will not bring solutions to Somalis.

Lol, in nearly every situation of the issues of Somalis, there has been documentaries from the war to the Qarxiis conducted from certain groups, yet Somali men going on camera talking about it, which sadly makes the country is look bad doesn't seem to be an issue, but the moment when the other 50% of Somalis talk about their personal experiences as well, that is when you care about your country reputation?! Please explain how these documentaries about qarxis, corruption and poverty helps Somalis?

It is clear that these gaal news stations have an agenda, yet on average Somali men only talk about the issues effecting Somali women when they're silencing a girl talking about. Even Somali women with a Somali audience talking in Af Somali who are having a dialogue with Somalis about certain issues back home are shut down. Like I said, if I wanted things to stay the same, I'd shut it down, hence the situation back home will always stay the same due to this.

Wallahi the hypocrisy is strong. Funny how when it comes to any other situation, you have no issues with gaal media reporting it.

The solution should lie with Somalis, but those that have the power, basically the men never want to acknowledge it. The only time this conversation is had is situations in which you lot are calling a girl a feminist or Western influenced when they dare to talk about the experiences of women back home. The same guys silencing the women NEVER talk about it in any other scenario. If we were having internal dialogues about this as a community in the 1st place, we'd be finding solutions and this embarrassment wouldn't be reaching gaals in the 1st place.

Believe it or not, if anyone is a hypocrite here, it is you. If you're genuine about the issues faced by Somali women, why not engage at the grassroots level? Why throw a fist when you only see a story in Western media once in a blue moon; or when you see a girl posting her private parts in social media, complaining about female circumcision and blaming it on Somali men? You just blow with the wind and, just like Westernized feminazi, you just throw the blame on Somali men.

Lastly, not sur why women who married non-Somali men have an obsession on Somali men? It is usually 2 groups of people who enjoy Somali laundry to be in the spotlight constantly: 1) Ex-Muslims; 2) Westernized feminazis who either married or are in a relationship with non-Somali, non-Muslim men. The whole intention is never about helping Somalis back home; it is about changing Somali people's character!

This is why I see you as a hypocrite. Also, what does this have to do with marrying an ajnabj?! I'm not married to one, nor do I intend to. This is a conversation about the mistreatment of women back home. I frequently go back, i'm a woman if you haven't noticed, so the issues we have as a community obviously effect me since well... I'm a woman.

Right now, you're accusing me of all sorts of things just for saying, why is it an issue for women to talk honestly about their day to day experiences? Its okay for people to talk about security issues, poverty ect, but we can't talk about our issues.

You even posted a video of a billa xishood girl in a thread about women's mistreatment as a way to undermine Somali women issues. Actually reflect on how you're also an issue. If you really cared about Somali reputation, why are you quick to repost a video of a Somali girl shaming herself?! That is what I mean about not caring about Somali 'ceeb', this is merely your misguided attempts to silence women.

Your hypocrisy is disgusting. What person that cares about ceeb and the Somali imagine, will repost a video of a Somali woman misbehaving on a platform that attracts thousends?!

You've actually just exposed yourself.

Someone should have firm control on Somali men. The moment they are given too much freedom they chew khat, abuse women and kill each other over qabil, their image in the media is really embarrasing.

See how you sound? The video was to highlight issues Somali women face and here you are attacking them for no reason.

Most decent people want life in Somalia to improve for women but you seem to want to silence their voices and control them. If your response to women saying they want to be treated equally is they shouldn't have freedom because xyz then you're just a misogynist.

Cause it is. Export of feminism is a documented strategy in western imperialism, that's an undeniable fact, particularly against conservative Muslims.

Any halfway competent state will manipulate domestic matters to achieve its goals. This includes presenting their undeniably imperialist aims as being noble or benign - I don't dispute this. The problem I have is with the general claim that every social justice movement in Muslim-majority countries is a vector for CIA psy-ops to destroy Islam. That's patently not true and it's disingenuous to pretend otherwise. Maybe girls in Afghanistan want to attend school without being killed? Perhaps women in Saudi Arabia want to enter public life without having male guardianship?
