What you, @Angelina, and others state clearly shows you guys never had an experience or visited nomadic Somalia. Being chubby doesn't mean overweight. There are people who are by hereditary chubby.

Besides, sugar has always been available until we can remember it. There are wild trees that grow up in the Somali habitat which the nomads always used to get their sugar. They dried it and then use that trunk of those trees to make shaah and in other dishes in which they need sugar.

I don't think a shift in change of attire was responsible. I think it's a switch in dietary practices more so. However, even when not using a religious example. When people only wear sweats they don't really notice the change in their waistlines. And wearing baggy clothes all the time makes it so that you don't know nor pay attention to the incremental fluctuations in weight.

Processed white cane sugar was not widely available outside of urban centers and even then not heavily consumed.
