30 Years of Living in the West

I'd imagine most of our parents came to the west from the 1990s onwards. Now that the second generation have largely reached adulthood, I think it's an interesting time of reflection.

From translating government documents for our parents when we were still learning the alphabet at school, to graduating, working jobs and starting families, or being a gang menace spending your days in HMP Feltham. It sure has been a long ride 🥲

I wonder how different the next generation's experiences will be, and if they'll be significantly divorced from their culture.

All immigrant families/diaspora born in west will eventually lose their identity and eventually mix whether it's by mixing out or losing culture/religion it's inevitable . This will happen next 100-200 years from now. It's already begun most 3rd gen Somalis dont speak Somali to their kids.

It feels like a weird mix of Dubai , Japan and china with all the new censorship laws

Dubai feels so fake to me it’s like a in your face reflection of the modern materialistic world

Yes that was me translating for my mother at 13 years old at the council tax office hahaha I left the the UK 10 years ago so I have totally different perspective. The next generation have educated parents well versed in the language and mostly middle clsss upbringing with parents who are home owners mostly I believe but I could be wrong.

Is there a lot of people like your parents who grew up in the UK. My generation they came here as adults
Nah I'm not around a lot of somalis but everyone i meet is a a first gen the only second gens I know are my cousins and a few family friends. I think my family left quite early during the war both my parents were 5 and grew up in western countries my mum said she was one of the ogs in Canada. Thinking about it though there's definitely more second gen over here but just not a lot.

Where did you go ?

I believe the third generation will actually have more options either to stay in the West or return to the Somali regions and help rebuild. I’m not a supporter of HSM, but I’ll give him credit for getting Somali oil out. That move will change the country for the better. I don’t like the 90/10 deal, but it’s a step Somalis have never taken before. When I refer to the third generation, I’m talking about Gen Alpha. By the time they reach their late twenties, Somalia should be more stable. This generation will be better off financially than previous ones because their families have learned how to invest, including in stock markets and other opportunities. They’ll also likely have homes in the West, as many of their parents realized it’s better to secure property there than in Somalia. On top of that, Gen Alpha will be far more educated than the two generations before them. With that education, knowledge, and expertise, they’ll be able to contribute significantly to Somalia something the country has lacked. By then, Somalia should also have the funds to properly pay and support these professionals.

Also why I had chosen the third generation is because of Somalia state as its now people will not listen to the second generation if they went down there to help.

If you live in UK , Ireland , Australia , or canada and are under 30 you’ll have to leave or you’ll be a miserable wage slave for the rest of your life

America and switerland are the last western nations with a real economy

I'm second gen lol so I didn't have this experience but both my parents were raised in the west so I think I'm a typical second gen

Your Parents were raised in the west did they come early like 70s scholarship era? If it's the 90 refugee wave and your saying their raised in the west? must of been esl crowd who went to secondary school or university. They definitely not born in the west as kids born are in 91 to 2002 and late 20s and early 30s and we have birth certificates not fake age from refugee camp. So your 18 and your dad is 28? so he had u at 10 years old.

America is also changing sxb the average house is 600k while the average salary is 60k. They have devalue the dollar and important stuff is getting too expensive people have noticed it already.

Im a third gen however im gen z so i dont know if i fit your criteria. I understand somali but cannot speak it properly so you could call me “reer chicken and chips”. Im most likely going to move out of the uk and move into countries like indonesia/singapore or malaysia. insha Allah if I get a remote job and im making hella bank then places like hawaii or bali would be the move for me personally.

overall third generation gen z’s are basically say wallahis. Generation alpha will be similar but a bit more lost culturally and this trend will continue unless they are taught the language and culture by their parents
