30 Years of Living in the West

I'd imagine most of our parents came to the west from the 1990s onwards. Now that the second generation have largely reached adulthood, I think it's an interesting time of reflection.

From translating government documents for our parents when we were still learning the alphabet at school, to graduating, working jobs and starting families, or being a gang menace spending your days in HMP Feltham. It sure has been a long ride 🥲

I wonder how different the next generation's experiences will be, and if they'll be significantly divorced from their culture.

All immigrant families/diaspora born in west will eventually lose their identity and eventually mix whether it's by mixing out or losing culture/religion it's inevitable . This will happen next 100-200 years from now. It's already begun most 3rd gen Somalis dont speak Somali to their kids.

It feels like a weird mix of Dubai , Japan and china with all the new censorship laws

Dubai feels so fake to me it’s like a in your face reflection of the modern materialistic world

Yes that was me translating for my mother at 13 years old at the council tax office hahaha I left the the UK 10 years ago so I have totally different perspective. The next generation have educated parents well versed in the language and mostly middle clsss upbringing with parents who are home owners mostly I believe but I could be wrong.

Is there a lot of people like your parents who grew up in the UK. My generation they came here as adults
Nah I'm not around a lot of somalis but everyone i meet is a a first gen the only second gens I know are my cousins and a few family friends. I think my family left quite early during the war both my parents were 5 and grew up in western countries my mum said she was one of the ogs in Canada. Thinking about it though there's definitely more second gen over here but just not a lot.
