Our Harari brothers and sisters are under siege, both culturally, and physically. In the past the city was bi-ethnic, with Somalis and Hararis being the majority, then steadily became tri-ethnic with the influx of Oromos. Then post-Menelik II, and his purge of the Somalis from Harar, it became a city inhabited mainly by Hararis, Oromos and Amharas. Today the latter two dominate and Hararis are outnumbered in their own city.
Let’s not delegitimise them as a people, cause unlike us they don’t have a vast homeland they can move to without losing their language and culture. Those Twitter threads targeting them don’t make sense to me.
To be honest it was our duty to free them from the highlanders, and we planned to do so in the 19th century with a 50 thousand man army after Menelik captured the city but wars with the European empires distracted us. Then we tried it in 77’ but were pushed back by the Soviet superpower.
And then we gave up al-together by distracting ourselves with petty issues.
