I have to say, it's very strange. Why have a mehr if it will be forgiven? It doesn't sit right with me that women are naming amounts knowing that they'll forgive it. Does the religion allow this? mehr is often forgiven she can reduce the amount, or if she wishes forgive the full amount otherwise it's a debt

The sheikh/elder negotiated the meher & lowered to $5000 and the father insisted they pay in advance, the mother of the potential husband told him they can’t pay 10 shillings at the moment and the father of the girl won’t trust them that they will ever pay the meher and the meeting ended abruptly.
This is why I’m highly so critical of this meher business. It’s a transaction for the sale of “virginity”. It’s like those girls online who auction their virginity to the highest bidder. At-least, these chicks are in control of their negotiations, but the case of the Somali girl in the above video is tantamount to a sheep been bought from the market. Meher is modern slavery sanctioned by culture and religion.
