The first is the bardheere dam project. This was a project that was far along in planning stages before collapse of country. Probably still not feasible due to all the instability in jubbaland. But will still list benefits and studies to show what’s at stake and possible in jubbaland
The goal was to complete the project in 1992 with following benefits:
- Flood damages would not occur any more. It has not yet be been investigated in detail, whether desheks can artificially flooded or have to be equipped with pumps for regulated irrigation.
- There would be enough water available all-year round for for the irrigation of the existing perimeters and the development of new large schemes with seasonal as well as perennial crops.
- Power generation at the dam site would allow the installation of electrical pumps for irrigation of agriculture.
This would generate a artificial lake for somalia to fish and use for irrigation and not be at mercy of river flows and droughts
So many people got displaced for the bardheere dam project but it never happened. We Will re make the damn in a grand scheme of few other dams downs stream in the juba valley. That will create good power source. Main problem would be a good flow of water straight from the bake mountains by fixing all the togs, small streams to pour on the river instead of other places.
The total investment cost of the project, including Dam, hydropower complex, power lines, access road and engineering costo. would amount to US $ 306.4 million according to prices in February 1984. This is equal to $890.11 million in 2023 money. The project was supposed to provide power for all of the south and Mogadishu as can be seen in power corridors figure above.

Who are in this project?
The IRR was calculated at 17.5% it would have been a big money maker for the government and international donors who invested. Project would have paid itself off around 5-6 years.
The Dam would store enough water to irrigate a minimum of 175,000 hectares of agricultural land. Assuming an implementation rate of 3,000 hectares per year from 1992 onwards, this figure would not be reached before 2,030, i.e. water availability will not become a bottleneck for agricultural development.
The power station would be equipped with three Kaplan turbines having a rated capacity of 105 mw resulting in a firm capacity of 97 mw. The plant would generate rate 423 gwh of primary (firm) energy and 101 gwh of energy per year.

"Villagers like these in Caanoole near Baardheere will be heavily affected by development of the new dam. Whether these impacts are negative or positive depends on how they are incorporated in Jubba Valley development"
They did a study on impact of relocating folks impacted by project and getting them employed and compensated. Didn't know folks were impacted, as project was in early stages. They did seem to put a lot of thought into issue though and ensuring project was accepted by locals . I linked the document below. Around 5 million was spent on training and getting experts to do feasiblity study. Project was far along so its believable processes started

Ethiopia and kenya were notified of project. Ethiopia tried to kill project even before it got off ground but they were shot down by international community that determined dam was downstream and wouldn't cause either country harm, Kenya didn't object.
Dont want to get to far into land rights and politics so this will be last bit on it for me
Juba river we have 6 billion cubic meters entering country based on the 1980's study. Today almost all of it is going out in the ocean near Gobweyne. We have major food and water shortages due to droughts and we are wasting this resource. This dam and reservoir would have saved countless lives...

Apparently the Juba river is a navigable water way. By simply building an inland port, it will get rid of Bardheere’s biggest challenge, it’s status as a land locked city.
Alot of studies out there but got most of my information from this one.
