Exactly, the guy was insane, he deliberately withheld weapons, artillery, ammunition and fuel from battalions commandeered by MJ generals and field commanders, when the official withdraw command was passed out, thousands of MJ and Hawiye perished at the frontlines, meanwhile his MX kin were safely escorted so they could further consolidate power in the South after the wars conclusion.

Hence the reason the coup was started by MJ/Hawiye officers in the first place, Barre's hatred of MJ destroyed Somalia forever.

Sounds like it would have been a better fit for Somalia, especially the anti-communism. But all 3 of the FLN, Tatmadaw, and Suharto eventually had a crisis when trying to escape authoritarianism.

One just became a geriatric dictatorship, the other a constant civil war, only the last one managed to transition to democracy and that is considered something of a miracle.

It's always a gamble with strongmen, and in a place as poor as Somalia I think once it went a few decades under military rule it was bound to break down.
