Y our parents be like that tho

it took me years for me to finally open up to my parents about my suicidal ideation and self-harm due to the stigma surrounding mental health. it was only after my 1st suicide attempt that i managed to let my parents know about it. my parents were luckily v supportive and gave me all the support i needed but i know that that's not true for everyone. mental health is serious and i wish that somalis took it more seriously
😭😭😭 if you feel comfortable sharing what was the backstory

jUst keeping it REAL homie
We need to be more open about mental health and willing to seek help, some of it is probably due to fear of what they might do to their children/relatives. I've heard that there are plenty of mental people in our community and they need help
You got to be mentally strong to survive in the Somali community, our parents are cold hearted savages who abuse us as children so we have a lot of childhood trauma to get over as grown adults

Nah my parents are amazing
Most of the Somali youth suffering mental illness come from homes were parents didn’t allow their children to be functional members of society.
They got a dumb careless absent father who are nothing more than chauffeur and an overly paranoid mothers scared their children will become gaalo. I have seen this theme in so many Somali households

there's really not much of a backstory- i slowly started to sink into this well of self-deprecation and despair and it eventually took over my life. i had friends, a wonderful support system but it didn't help a single bit. depression doesn't care about what you've gone through/whether or not if you have a good home life. it'll destroy you piece by piece, until you eventually succumb to it

Damn so you just started to get depressed out of the blue?

Honestly I think mental issues are western issues because of the complex society, back in Somalia people were simple, lived simply and had simple thoughts
