Fun fact its the other way around they prefer english media in english rather than their japanese dubs. This phenomenon of the sub sound better than the dub is because when you are watching the sub. You are looking at text and listening at the voice of character in a foreign language so when they have emotianal moment it sounds like they are effectivaly delivering the sentiment on the subtitle

It doesnt occur to you with the sub that delivering the sentiment in real life with that emotion would sound very ridiculous That is what the dub draws your attention to. Also that the animating the talking is often times done very lazily but with the sub you would never notice because you are too busy reading text at the bottom

When I was young (15-18) at the time I tried to get into sub instead of dub. But I couldn’t do it. It felt like work instead of enjoyment. Three years ago (age 22) I got into it again this time I could focus on the subtitle better.
