Great. The soul and consciousness are intertwined and the latter has nothing got to do with our brain, I got you thus far, what happens to the soul when we briefly lose consciousness. Or how about when all the wires to the brain and heart are disconnected in a hospital, we lose total consciousness and die. Were the machines keeping alive the soul or our two major organs?
Okay, there is a lot to unpack.
Death and Sleep are shrouded in mysteries although science provides clinical explanations for both based on observations in medical settings. These clinical observations and definitions do not fully answer all the questions such as the one you asked about consciousness. So, let us look at Islam.
In Islam, Losing consciousness briefly is like losing your soul briefly, that self awareness that gives you the experience of living whilst you are not completely dead. Good example to draw from is in the case of sleep, You are both dead and alive. Your vitals are present but your consciousnesses isn't. It is somewhere close and comes back with some invitation. This is observable and we all have seen sleeping people and woke many from their sleep for a reason. They come to life as we are looking at them.
Additionally, Death is considered a long sleep and resurrection is like waking up from that long and deep sleep mode. When someone sleeps, it is as if they went dead(their soul, self awareness is gone) though their body is alive and has some connection to their souls still.. Allah says .. “
It is He, Who takes your souls by night (when you are asleep), and has knowledge of all that you have done by day”6:60.
Jump forward into the future and when people wake up from their death, Allah told us some will make this expression: “
They will say, “Woe to us! Who has raised us up from our sleeping place?””36:52. The perception of these people about their earlier death is like they were really sleeping and wished to go back to that state instead of facing the consequences of their actions past after they are awoken/resurrected. They thought they were sleeping all this time before they were resurrected. Also, time passage to these people is perceived as very short though they were sleeping for however long the day of judgement took to materialize. Resurrected people will debate among themselves on the subject of how long they were dead. They give varying guesswork but all agree it was not really that long they were dead.
to sum up:
"
Death is like a long sleep, grave like a sleeping place, and resurrection after death like waking up. A verse says:“And He it is Who takes your souls at night (in sleep), and He knows what you acquire in the day, then He raises you up therein that an appointed term may be fulfilled; then to Him is your return, then He will inform you of what you were doing” (Al-An’am/The Cattle 6:60).
Let me know if you run into a science material that explains this consciousness and the loss of it. Would be of interest to me.
