Shaykh Ibn Taymiyyah
may Allaah have mercy upon him
mentioned that the jinn may take the image of a black cat, like the case of a black dog, as he said, "The black dog is the devil of the dogs and the jinn take his image much, as well as the image of a black cat, because the black color gathers the satanic forces and it has the strength of heat."

I thought this was a superstition. Aren’t superstitions like this haram? @Hamzza I need you to find me the islamic evidence for this because as far as I’m concerned, there’s none.

Can someone make a thread on the negative beliefs around anything black and how it places into peoples psychology and perception of black people?

I don't think this had much to do with the simple color black, even in af somali there are expressions like "maalin madow" (a dark day) it doesn't mean we hate ourselves. Many languages have this. Black is associated with darkness, we are technically brown not Black when you look at the color.
Having said this Ibn Taymiya has some other more disturbing stuff, he believed in Arab superiority non individually but generally that as a nation they are superior

I swear there was an Islamic scholar that wrote about blackness and the nobility of it. I forgot his name and the title but it was to propagate and fight against anti blackness he saw in Basra.

You can’t say people associating everything bad with darkness or black doesn’t have an effect on how they treat black people. I’ve read about a lot of different cultures and honestly, they do.

Really? Proof :gucciwhat:

I went on other forums and 95% is people saying it’s false superstition and that believing in it is shirk. The other 5% were quoting ibn taymiyah. Like there’s no other source but his one statement. I’m gonna have to pass on this one.

Check the last quote on this page. It's from Ibn Taymiya.

Basically Ibn Taymiyya like many other scholars believed that Arabs were better in lineage , virtue and descent, this didn't mean all Arabs were better than non Arabs but there was an implication that Persians as a people for example had inferior descent. Keep in mind most schools of thought dislike the marriage of an Arab woman to a non Arab because of this lineage thing. It's not forbidden but it's considered not a compatible marriage.

Al jawzi he wrote "on the virtue of blacks and Abyssinians" a quite rare good representation of black people in the Arab world

It may have an effect but the contrary isn't true for classical Arabs at least ( modern Arabs are different). Arabs are darker than whites but still associated white with good, but this doesn't mean they believed white people were better than them. Actually being to white wasn't considered a good thing by Arabs and there Arabs who describe themselves as Asmar (dark) in contrast to white people.

"It is obligatory on a Muslim to believe that Arabs are preferred over other nations because there is a proof for it. However, this is not one of the pillars of our religion such that if someone rejected this, they would be considered outside of Islam. But if one does reject this, one has sinned for not believing in it because it is an affirmed matter according to a clear rigorously authenticated hadith."

I heard some older scholars made such problematic comments that essentially went against the prophets word. It’s funny how they say it isn’t a compatible marriage lol, they should’ve just said their real feelings of mateguarding.

Some obscure guy in a flannel shirt pops up when I search his name. A pakistani too. When I copied and pasted your comment nothing came up. Where did you find it?

It was Al jahiz who wrote the book " pride of blacks over whites", but the thing is his grandfather was black too which explains his views, most arab scholar of that time did not have good views on blacks

Thats just how it is, anything black is viewed as wrong while white is right and it won't change anytime soon

Black is darkness and darkness is associated with evil or something someone may fear like ghosts or demons. White is associated with light and vision. Would you rather walk down a pitch black street, or a well-lit street?
