They was fishing for pearls (luul) and ambergris(Caambaro) even on the eastern coast. It was a big revenue source for many.

Quite a few Somalis would venture off and join parties to dive for pearls as far as Socotra

In the book Pearls, Arms and Hashish: Pages from the Life of a Red Sea Navigator by Henri de Monfreid

He has several pages detailing Somali pearl diving parties and Sailors in the red Sea and his adventures with them.
