Why does somalia have no subway or railways?

Everyone claims things were good in before siad barre went nuts and that he was setting up deals to extract our resources, but what about the rest of the infrastructure? Why are we so behind everyone? Almost every other country in the 60's and 70's had built some sort of train system and railway system to transport resources mined.

So what happened? Was siad barre going to do this until the civil war broke out? It's strange that we had peace and yet not one of the barre cabinet had the idea to do business with peaceful Scandinavian countries to build up infrastructure. Even the desert rats managed to build a city or two from 1960 onwards.
Dubai got the oil after we refused a deal woukd have allowed the mining company to take advantage of us. The president said move on.
Somalida waa daad reer guura. No need for trains at the time. Today from borama to bosaso to Galkacyo the roads built by Siad barre are still being used. As for Galkacyo and south waa la iiga badiya

Somalia was not a densely populated country. Urban cities didn't exist so there was no need for railways at the time.

To build railways and manage it would simply need large fundings and use a large percentage of the national budget with not enough gain. Each transport system is built into the country's infrastructure and as such must make economic sense or eventually close. There were other more important things to use the money on I guess.

Sxb, Mogadishu has always been a big city, but it wasn’t his priorities as the Russians were willing to give him whatever he wanted. Check the vast underground railways they built in Central Asia (former republics of the USSR).

Tell me why we needed trains. To transport people. Most people are nomads and spread out. Transport goods when there where roads leaving berbera,bosaso,kismayo.xamar.
We didnt have pop or need. Those countries were storage for weapons and minerals were being mined

Asia had several 100 million in those days, and central Asia had highly industrialized cities with big urban populace. The population in Somalia was around 3 million, and Mogadishu population in the 60-70s had 100-200 thousand peoples. Other cities were much smaller, and all other people lived in rural areas and villages. What's the point in wasting money on railway infrastructure when there are no big cities? People were nomads and the population density was extremely low. Even though Somalia has a much bigger population today, the people living in urbanised cites only make out 40% of the populace.

You sound like you’ve never been to Hamar and comparing it to Xaafuun. Mogadishu has been a major city during Siad Barre’s regime and required a train service. But it was never his agenda. Domestically, MSB’s interests were policies of sticks and carrots like any benolavent dictator. He was obsessed in becoming a military strongman and offered the educated classes primary industries for employment and a liberal lifestyle that made them proud of him. His main concerns were internal challenges to his leadership which he ruthlessly wiped them out including the Wahhabi sheikhs and clans from Puntland and later on from Somaliland and the South.

Xamar is designed to have a tram system, like Melbourne.

The tree-lined boulevards are perfect for light rail instead of ugly heavy rail networks.

Should I scream so you could hear it loud and clear? Mogadishu was a cosmopolitan big city and required train services. Regional trains from Mogadishu to kismayo, Baydhabo, Hargeisa and Bosaaso via Jowhar, Hiiraan, Mudug would have helped people and produce and helped the economy.

I disagree . There was no need for it then and no need for it now. Screaming wont do anything. Where is your proof and stats. Again how would people afford the cost. Is it worth shipping goods as the cost of running a train is enormous

@Rocca Littorio

Xamar has expanded beyond the boulevards and into the sticks and is required more than a tram service. Laying the tram lines/tracks would cost an arm and a leg, better if a train service would’ve been spent if there is any budget for it. But the priorities now should be saving lives and housing people.

@Suldaanka

Ok

The British asked Somalis whether they wanted them or the Italians.

The Somalis chose the Italians so they destroyed everything of use and gave NFD/Ogaden away.
I'm so happy Brexit is fucking them. Allah has accepted my Ramadan prayer against gaalo nations. First Britain....then America's shit down....now north korea is threatening to continue nuke ambitions and France turning third world for their past sins. If Somalis can't make good use to of this diversion then we truly will forever fail.

The British were xaasid wallahi.

They gave Somaliland nothing and had the audacity to ask us if we wanted the Italians.

Ok

Thats true but will be hard to build underground in places like Shingaani and Xamar Weyne.

If we had light rail on the boulevards that link to efficient bus services in the suburbs, Xamar would be set transport-wise.

The only issue is the bajaaj drivers becoming unemployed and might turn to AS.

The Mogadiscio-Villabruzzi Railway (Italian: Ferrovia Mogadiscio-Villabruzzi) is an historical railway system that ran through southern Somalia. It was constructed between 1914 and 1927 by the colonial authorities in Italian Somaliland. The railway connected the capital city Mogadishu with Afgooye, and subsequently with Jowhar. The line was later dismantled by British troops during World War II.

Plans for re-establishing the railway were done in the 1980s by the Siad Barre administration, but were aborted after the regime's collapse.
