But in the context of the societies that practiced it, the idea was that by sealing the vaginal opening (except for a small hole for urine and menstruation), it would make penetration more difficult or impossible without visibly breaking the seal. This was thought to deter potential attackers, especially when girls were alone tending livestock far from others. In addition, families believed it helped preserve a girl’s ‘virginity’—which was often linked to her marriageability and social value. So it was about social control as much as perceived physical protection. Of course, from today’s standpoint, we know it causes immense harm and doesn’t protect anyone in any meaningful or humane way.”

FGM seems to have been deeply engrained in Somali culture to the extent the Xeedho symbolises the female genitalia. The whole idea is opening up the you know what……I don’t think it was just for stopping sexual assault. Many Somalis got infections when they got married and sexual intercourse was painful for ladies.

I learnt it during class and when I saw the 99% thing I was terrified for my future walahi. I asked my parents what fgm was and they told to shush, waxas ha naga hathlin and that we are not like those people.

My dad told me there was a big campaign in the SL region sl urbanites don't do it anymore but it still occurs in the country side

No, he's right. It makes absolutely no sense to ramble about this to a room full of cadaans (if that is what she is doing) who will do literally nothing about it but use it as ammunition to paint Somalis in a poor light in their cunsuri circles and agendas.

Shine a light on it in Somali circles and partake in activism within the community to put a complete stop to it. But this... it kinda just reads as sympathy farming with foreigners at the expense of your community.

But what does she owe the somali community when it failed her when she needed them most? I understand it's stupid to air out things that could be used against you but I don't really judge trauma victims on their rationality when it comes to those things. They probably hold cil towards the somali community tbh
