This has been a thing since the Pre-Islamic times unfortunately. It’s funny though because 8/10 times the daughter is the one taking care of their parents in their old age.

Somali proverb: :"Dumar iyo hadalba iyagoon la jeclayn bay bataan"

Translation: "Women and talk become too much when they are not loved that much".

Further explanation: Even if you don't like to talk too much, people still do it.

Similarly, women become too numerous when they were not expected nor wished by others.

The desire to have more sons than daughters is something rooted in deep our nomadic culture.

It was narrated from Ibn Abbas that the Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) said:
"There is no man whose two daughters reach the age of puberty and he treats them kindly for the time they are together, but they will gain him admittance to Paradise."

In essence it's a jahiliyya way of thinking. We all know women are underrated when they carry families and are expected to sacrifice their lives for the well-being of those around them.
