This has been a thing since the Pre-Islamic times unfortunately. It’s funny though because 8/10 times the daughter is the one taking care of their parents in their old age.
And considering that daughters give more back in the way of remittance and have an equal or greater hand in taking care of their parents than sons, they are on a similar footing, especially in the west.
It was narrated from Ibn Abbas that the Messenger of Allah(ﷺ) said:
"There is no man whose two daughters reach the age of puberty and he treats them kindly for the time they are together, but they will gain him admittance to Paradise."
In essence it's a jahiliyya way of thinking. We all know women are underrated when they carry families and are expected to sacrifice their lives for the well-being of those around them.
