Why are young Somali's driving cabs in the US?

Just came back from an overseas trip to the US (seattle) one thing that surprised me was the amount of young Somali cab/uber drivers that I came across. At the airport I went down to the parking bays for driving apps and all I saw was a whole line of Somali's waiting for passengers....at least 50% of the cab drivers were Somali

And most these guys weren't even older folks, they were guys in their mid 20s to early 30s. Some of them refused me as they were looking for $100 fares with UberX. I took a ride with one of them and asked him why he drove a cab and didn't get a real job....he's answer was that he liked the flexibility of driving uber and didn't like rigid nature of 9-5 jobs...called it "slavery". I was speechless and just left it at that.

It wasn't just at the airport...overtime I called a ride on Uber it was like 30% chance it was a Somali (which is an absurdly high rate)

Seems like there is zero shame in the somali community about driving taxis.....most immigrants drive taxis for a short amount of time to get get their feet on the ground and move onto other things....but for somali's it is intergenerational.....

We need to encourage somali's to get real fu*king jobs. What is the point of being raised in America, going to high school here if you're going to be content on doing a job a refugee from Dadaab that came yesterday could do? Just stay in Dadaab. What a useless person you are if all you could achieve is being a life long cab driver, given all the opportunities here.

Somalis are currently made fun of because we are the LOWEST in household income out of any immigrant group....by a large margin. And being satisfied with low paying dead end jobs is part of the problem.

There is definitely something wrong with it if you take it as a career. You can make 2k in a week sure, but you def can't rely on it week on week. Hows that 2k going during the pandemic?

I'm not saying don't drive uber under any circumstances, but we need to learn to use it as a stop gap, not a permanent career.

Why would you pursue a career that:
1. Has low income. Don't come at me with the 2k, average uber driver earn less than the avg US income.
2. Guaranteed to be automated away in the next 10-15 yrs max.
3. Very low job security, as I mentioned you will be competing now with the refugees that fled Taliban the other month.
4. Not learning anything. Other jobs every year you get experience, you can compound that to get better jobs. But driving a car, year 1 is the same as yr 20.

Give them time. How do you know if they are not studying or working on other projects? They are earning and proving that's what matters. I did crappy jobs while at uni that most people wouldn't even look at. Driving a cab is a flexible job and pays ok.

Very underrated job actually. I do it part time and work full time and actually thinking leaving my full time job for it. You start and finish whenever you want and you can make decent money without working for anyone. A lot of people love the flexibility

Flexibility , pay less taxes, work for yourself…if you hustle you can make decent money on Uber…easily $1k a week up to 2k a week depending incentives, demand and how much your willing to work…heck they probably make more than you do at your glorified office job…

not everyone is suited for a 9-5 job or running a busienss…If they are making halal money and supporting themselves than I comend them!

I went to Seattle two times and my Uber drivers were HOA or white .
How do you know all the drivers were Somalis ? Uber drivers at the airport are located upstairs, they are not at the regular passenger pickup location. You have to take the sky bridge, look for the line # your drive told you. It is kinda dark and hard to see who in the in cars.

I don’t know about making more than a white collar but an Uber driver makes more than a teacher thats for sure.

If they got an electric car it’s pure profit. But gas prices are going up.

They definitely make more than entry jobs. Some Uber drivers make 85k or over a year. But I guess it depends on the city.

Some dental hygienists and plumbers make about more than white collar professionals if you account for all the debt and the fact that they enter the workforce a lot sooner.

I heard that niggas in the states are caking from that truck money. Like 6-10k usd monthly just by driving under someone else's truck. I dunno about y'all but that's real dough. Sweden, unless you out there selling sanka, it's really hard to make that money
