Why are young Somali's driving cabs in the US?

Somalis are way too content with bare minimum. Taxi driving is a decent job for an older fob but after almost two generations in the west we should aspire for better. Asian families would never be okay with their children doing taxi driver or warehouse work instead of going to uni or even opening a business and that’s why their communities are so successful

They are all fobs. Somalis just started going to the US 20 years ago
There are Somalis who lived in the states since the 70s and 80s and most college students are Gen z who were born bred in the us.
You are right tho some Somalis who came in the 90s and early 2000s still act fobs.

Just came back from an overseas trip to the US (seattle) one thing that surprised me was the amount of young Somali cab/uber drivers that I came across. At the airport I went down to the parking bays for driving apps and all I saw was a whole line of Somali's waiting for passengers....at least 50% of the cab drivers were Somali :mindblown:

And most these guys weren't even older folks, they were guys in their mid 20s to early 30s. Some of them refused me as they were looking for $100 fares with UberX. I took a ride with one of them and asked him why he drove a cab and didn't get a real job....he's answer was that he liked the flexibility of driving uber and didn't like rigid nature of 9-5 jobs...called it "slavery". I was speechless and just left it at that.

It wasn't just at the airport...overtime I called a ride on Uber it was like 30% chance it was a Somali (which is an absurdly high rate)

Seems like there is zero shame in the somali community about driving taxis.....most immigrants drive taxis for a short amount of time to get get their feet on the ground and move onto other things....but for somali's it is intergenerational.....

lol I wrote the same exact thing in a post I made before and everyone got angry for me at it. I agree with you. So many of these dudes in Toronto as well. Why is it rare to see Somalis working at a car fix shop or electrician, construction, blue collar work? They either are Uber/truck drivers or working some cushy office job. We need to start diversify and get into other fields

There’s nothing wrong with honest work? I would rather have young Somali men do this then join gangs or do criminal activities. Stop being so negative.

abaayo, why is your standards so low for Somali men? You are really just satisfied that Somali men are not in gangs and dealing drugs and can keep a minimum wage job? Is it really too much to ask for for Somali men to earn more than the minimum wage? We constantly sh*t talk west africans here and Ethiopians etc.....when they run circles around us economically. Somali's are weird bunch.

Don't mind him sxb, he's just one of those guys who have hard-ons for white collar professions like they're the be all end all. Some dental hygienists and plumbers make about more than white collar professionals if you account for all the debt and the fact that they enter the workforce a lot sooner.

He's acting like some indoyaar tiger mom/engineering obessed she-Pajeet auntie lol

That's exactly what I was advocating for. Any skilled job would suffice. I wasn't discriminating against blue collar jobs, but cab drivers are the bottom of the barrel in the job hierarchy & should be looked down upon.

Yup, these guys usually are investing in a business too, he worships corporate culture where you are a slave to the system
As I mentioned, I was referring to career cab drivers, not someone saving up for some capital to start a business, that's totally fine.

For some reason physical labour seems to be kryptonite to Somali's....what's up with that? Even in Somalia people would rather stay broke & beg for money rather than pick up a shovel and go to a construction site. There needs to be some research into this, might have to do with the skinny wrists and forearms we are endowed with or if its just a cultural thing.

How about not shaming people who are doing honest job. You sound very arrogant and ignorant. No honest job should be looked down on and taxi drivers do very important job. You sound like those idiots who also look down on truck drivers without realising society would collapse without them

i have respect for truck drivers, that's a tough job that requires some skill actually. not taxi drivers though.

There is huge market for taxi drivers and they take people from A-B. It’s a billion dollar business for a reason. A lot of taxi drivers make better money than people with degrees

Listen dabaalyahow, driving taxis as a career as young person with plenty opportunity is a stupid idea. I can tell you've taken a deadend job as a career (uber driver?) as you seem offended by what i'm saying.

A person with a degree can make 40k in year 1.....but with new experiences and skills can earn double/triple that in less than 10 yrs. A taxi driver will be on the same income for 40 years straight, there is no growth in that career. Do not compare a taxi driver with even a warehouse worker, yet alone a job that requirers a degree. At least in a warehouse you can move up in management (as i've seen plenty of times) and learn some other skills like logistics, forklift etc

And as i've already explained to you investing time in a taxi career while young is a complete waste of time as it will be automated away with self driving cars. Would you have wasted 10+ years driving a car, or some other job where you could have gained experience & skills?

A lot of younger Somalis in America seem to be working only part time, getting stuck at community college for years while living with hooyo without really having a plan with their lives. Kinda depressing

You dumbass if you think in 10 years there will be automated driving. And taxi driving is not a career. People do it because of the flexibility and freedom where they can work and stop any moment they want which gives them time to do other things they want.

In Australia, you will never find a Somali Uber driver under 30.

You won’t even find Somali Uber drivers that were born in Australia.

Waa ceeb.

I get doing it as a side job if you’re middle aged or a fob.

I don’t wanna see anymore Somalis doing Uber, warehouse work or criminal activities in the next decade.

Is that too hard to ask.

That’s all I’m saying bro

Again, want to emphasise nothing wrong with doing it, even if you were born in the West, as long as it’s temporary and you have a plan for bigger and better things.

But folks like @Sueeeeeee, @TekNiKo and @Jaydaan really feel it’s a legit, respectable, long term career choice.

My standards are not low love but I don’t want to judge because we really don’t know the circumstances. Maybe they are doing this part time whilst they work on their degree or maybe they just love it. I don’t know.. either way a job is a job.

The real question is, what do you do? Acting like you're a CEO of a Fortune 500 company.

People are getting laid off left, right and center. A lot of people with degrees don’t have steady long term career. All that matters is what money you are making now as no one can tell the future. There is many ways to make money and live comfortable life and sadly people with degrees has been brainwashed into thinking it’s the only way. I have full time job working for respected company and I drive taxi part time and I will honestly leave my full time job soon because I simply don’t want to work for anyone anymore. Don’t worry I used to be limited in my thinking as well thinking. Getting degree, work for a company and becoming a cog was the only way as well.
