In 2001 there was a referendum held every Somaliland's region where they all approved the newly drafted constitution with Awdal voting 90% while the lowest percentage of approval in any of the region was in Laascanod where 54% said yes and 45% said no and you can't say they are fake or they were rigged when the govt of Cigaal was weak and the election in Laaascanod was done under the oversight of Dhulbahante community as SL had no authority or presence in the city or district.

There needs to be updated referendums reason being at that point in time Somalia did not have any government of any sort. Therefore that might have made them vote pro Somaliland. Now that Somalia has a governemnt (even if its not functioning well) and there is some hope of somaliweyn their point of view ma change.

I might be biased since I am originally from Somaliland, but favouritism aside logically it would make more sense for Somalia to give Somaliland it's recognition back as it would benefit somalis as a whole. Just think about it for a second, Somaliland is probaly the only place in East Africa that actually has potential so imagine if it does become an independent country and succeed, wouldn't that create a domino effect and give Somalia some sort of support or ally?

Giving somaliland recognise doesn't mean we should be fully cut off any relationship with Somalia, in an ideal world could form some sort of union together with Djibouti were we could help one another and trade (similar to how the EU works).

I know alot of you diaspora are very patriotic when it comes to "freeing" ogedan and NFD (as if they can't do that themselves) but why do so many of you have anonymity against northerners wanting to be independent and fixing their own problems?

Somaliland should rename itself then start thinking of independence. Somaliland is just a dumb name lowkey but honestly for now I think Somaliland is much better off away from Somalia judging by the replies on this thread

I honestly don't care if Somaliland gains independence it's not like we will be losing anything vital that we don't have already. Maybe we can even cooperate in the future as two separate Somali states. The problem is that others like Jubaland, Puntland ect are probably gonna follow and maybe that's inevitable bc I don't see Somalis being united in the near future.
