Why are Somalis so obsessed with democracy and elections?

I’ve noticed Somalis online are so obsessed with foreign man-made concepts such as democracy/elections and even boast about it. Some users on here even call for the forced removal of rulers who extend their presidency. Democracy/elections are not requirements for successful governments. I don’t think i’m the only one that doesn’t theoretically have any problem with autocratic rule (dictatorship or absolute monarchy) as long as the ruler is doing their job correctly and ruling by Islamic law?

Democracy doesn’t work in countries like Somalia. Everybody will just vote for their own corrupt or not. Educate the population first

Don’t mix religion with politics, we need to separate it
Are you a even a Muslim? Or are you just stupid? We need to govern our lands with the laws of Allaah swt and we can't seperate our religion from politics. Seperating religion from politics is a western concept and not something from islaam.

I think we should make Somalia progressive, all of you live in the west and are comfortable and progressing because of its system and never want to leave. Why so pushy for sharia back home. Lets modernize our country
Yeah bro make Somalia lgbtq+ friendly that’ll definitely help our economy and corruption :mjlol:

In the known history of the Somali people, theirs has never been a time in which they were ruled by an autocratic rule other then-recent time of Siyad Barre, furthermore Somali's have also never been ruled by Islamic Law in their history.

The earlier Somali people used a traditional law called 'xeer', which was based on Islamic rules but also had elements of Somali traditions. In essence, Somali culture was always democratic and goals had to be reached through a consensus, similar to modern elections.

Also, traditional Somali society was Sufi in nature and quite lax, however, since the fall of Said Barre's government, we have had elements of Salafi ideology filtered into Somali culture from Somalis who were though in Saudia Arabia and Yemen.

Autocratic rule and harsh Salafi rules are antitheses to the Somali culture and love of freedom, that's why groups like Alshabab and dictators are disliked.

“In the known history of the Somali people, theirs has never been a time in which they were ruled by an autocratic rule”

This isn’t true. There were Somali sultanates who’s lands were governed by absolute monarchies.

“Autocratic rule and harsh Salafi rules are antitheses to the Somali culture and love of freedom”

And that’s why Somalia has been a failed state for 3 decades, they don’t like the rule of law or they’re not pragmatic with the rule of law. Any slight disagreement with the ruler can lead to him being violently overthrown. If a Muslim ruler seizes power by force then it’s an obligation to obey him for the sake of peace and stability in society.

who said anything about LGBTQ

We should be progressive & secular. women should be allowed freedom, one man one vote, freedom of speech etc. We will not improve with sharia law in my opinion especially as somalis take things too far.

Somali salafis in the west are already a headache i cant imagine the mess they would make in mass back home

That relies on integrity. Somali sheikhs pipe up and use religion to rally behind politicians they personally support. Imagine clowns like that making rules and judgements based on religion.

Absolute monarchies but ruled by consensus. The reality is Somalis will never accept dynastic rule or harsh rule, it's the nature of the Somali people.

This is above your pay grade.

Somalis have always been Sufis, even though I don't agree with many Sufi practices, the Salafi ideology which was exported from Saudia Arabia has done considerable harm to Somali society.

You are infected by the extremists.

I don’t think there are even many Sufis left but the place they are like in Galgaduud, they’ve proven they are the strongest fighters against the khawarij. You should show them some respect.

I am not sufi but Somalia was a better nation when it was. Now we’ve got little suicide bombers running around everywhere demanding everyone follows their strict doctrine.
