Why are Somalis in the West losing the language so quickly?

Somali is hard. Has anyone even outlined the grammatical rules for teaching it or are we just winging it?

:comeon:Somali is pretty easy to learn as a language. It's just that it doesn't have the amount of resources for learning that languages like French and Arabic have. That's the fault of the Somali government and people. The Somali government doesn't even have an official institution dedicated to preserving and propagating the language. Somalis people don't have the initiative to set up their own language programmes like Rosetta Stone or Teach Yourself guides.

You're comparing the resources of Central European countries like Germany and Netherlands to Somalia? The only Somalis with full access to Wikipedia are diaspora and they more likely to speak the languages of the country they live in.

That argument may have had some validity in the 90s or early 00s, but now internet access is even common in the third world. Many third world languages have big wikis. It might be a sign of weak scholarly culture among Somalis.

Have you seen the comment sections on Somali news websites? There are thousands of Somali trolls out there ..in Somalia often. People are people everywhere, lol.

PS. The Somali GDP stat is fake news. Nobody has done a detailed study on it and in Somaliland and Puntland it is higher than most of Africa.

I doubt it, but let's not get too offtopic. Outside the capital areas most of Africa is just as bad as Somalia if not worse.

A more ontopic thing: Somalia has higher internet connection rates than Ethiopia..

There's the Regional Somali Language Academy which is an intergovernmental regulating body for the Somali Language, its located in Djbouti and is a joint effort by the government's of Somalia, Djbouti & Ethiopia. I remember it being quite popular in the news when it was launched a few years back.

I have come across a few teach yourself guides including:

Af Somaali Aan Ku Hadalno (Hadallo) (2007) by Abdillahi Abdinoor
Colloquial Somali: A Complete Language Course

I'm sure if anyone does a quick trip to a public/university library in a major city they can find similar guide books or order online if you don't live in a big city.

A young Somali man from the U.K created a website called SomaliBaro.com, it's not up and running anymore but here's his story - Can E-learning Save the Somali Language of the Next Generation?

There's another website, Afkii Hoyoo by some Somali's in Sweden - its geared towards children but I would presume that a lot of Somali teens/young adults could benefit based on their level.

There are a few older Somali men making video's on YouTube:
Mr. Fanah Adam
Dugsigga Aflax

The younger generation of Somali's are more interested in watching terrible Somali challenges or having an cadaan man teach them the numbers 1-10.

All of that to say is you will find what you search for! Though I don't think its realistic for us to expect to have the same level or quality of resources as French or Arabic, there are Somali's making efforts to preserve the language but we need to create the demand. Not many of us are willing to invest time and resources into the Somali language judging from some of the responses here.

All of this is also assuming that media/resources is the main reason why the Somali language isn't being passed on in the west (which I don't agree it is).

Everything starts in the home through communicating with family members, a trip to the motherland or simply sitting with the elders and chatting would probably outdo hours of reading books, resources and watching movies.

Are these folks serious? Theres unlimited amount of different types of Somali websites that are available on the internet.

Heck Somnet is a treasure trove for starters. Do not go to the facebook social media, these are slang somali and you wont understand it until your an expert.

You are all just lazy, it may take a few years but you can achieve it.

Im now still learning and at the level of understanding but slowly deciphering Sayidka poems, Cali Dhuux, Ismaciil Mire and Hadraawi.

I bet most of you dont even know these men and the exemplary poet styles that intrigue the mind.

Somali is a truly rich language

All my family members and relatives are able speak English, as they should. There won't be a language barrier. It's not my job to save the langaab Somali language in the Western world. There is no place for it here. The much gigantic Chinese and Indians are starting to lose their language.

I find it very offensive you are pushing the Somali language on me. The Somali identity will be dying with me anyway and not going past my family generation. I'm on Somalispot as an extended farewell and to plan for the funeral. I'll tell my kids I don't know my background when they ask

:dead::dead::dead:

I made a group on FB with my Somali friends and random natives who live in Somalia and Diaspora

If u want I can add you

Way too many swear words but the group is very educational

I can't say the same thing for other Somali people in London but I know all my sibling, their Somali is not really fluently. Besides, they couldn't read or to write Somali words like me. I really don't speak Somali at all because of my hearing loss, and my parent had a reason not to teach me the Somali language, they don't want to put too much on pressure on me because they think teaching me Somali would slow my English language development during the childhood and teenage so eventually they decided that English is more important for my educational and my future. By the way, I can lip read as well and speak orally in an English language but not Somali though

I met many Somali people who are also deaf or hard of hearing, they couldn't speak Somali either.

However, it'd be different if I was born in Somalia.
