Lots of white Western Europeans retire in Turkey (almost like a second Spain). It's not that bad. If they stay out of the politics and stay in the Western half of Turkey they should be fine.

*The Eastern portion of Turkey is dangerous with Kurdish issues and problems spilling over from Syria.
