Not true. There many people there with businesses there don’t need help from family. I have a lot of issue with Somalia and Xamar but the amount of businesses and many to be made is staggering for those that can get a bit of leg up from family in the beginning. It always surprises me when I visit how you can find a lot of things you can find in the West as people are constantly starting new businesses.

Darusalam isn’t even the only place. Many Xafads that look poorer are in fact more expensive than Darusalam, since Darusalam is rather far from the centre which is where all the money is. Places like Hodan, Waberi, Hoolwadag and the like are more expensive. The funny thing about Xamar which you also find in every city in Somalia is that the rich and poor live close by. So you’ll get a street with apartment blocks owned by one family, a big gated villa and right behind it you have jingaads.

Yes and those people get money from people in the west to help them get there businesses up, it's very hard to start businesses or make money in Somalia without western help, do you have family members in Xamar??? The people are struggling

My family which are numerous in Xamar back home are middle class and we don’t send them a penny, so in many ways I’m in a bubble. I go back a lot. They have their own businesses and live in gated houses.
Unfortunately poverty is rife but there have always been an upper middle class that have retained their status from even before the war and have managed to sell land to start businesses ect.
The poorest from what I’ve seen tend to be those that are recently from the Miiy and minority clans unfortunately.

No one is denying that. Obviously the diaspora have more, but there are many locals who live lifestyles like that. In every society there are the rich, middle class and poor and Somalia has that despite being a third world country. Why is it controversial? Why is it an issue for us to build nice places and have certain types of businesses? Are we meant to remain stagnant and only show tin houses and garbage on the floor?
