Not entirely sure.

The Gaal Madow wars is mainly a southern tradition/history. I don't recall anywhere in the north where it is mentioned. And it’s unlikely a large amount of Oromos were moving into the Hawd since it would be orally recorded by the Somalis there.
Many clans local to that area, not just MJ have oral history relating to them expelling these “gaal madow” from the pastures and wells they previously occupied, while the gaal madow wars were happening in the south it is not all that inconceivable that galla were present in the hawd and parts of mudug before the arrival of the various Darod clans that occupy that country today, for the very reason that it was sparsely populated and indefensible country, far from the populated waqooyi and shabelle regions.

my theory and it’s just a theory is that Somalis migrated through the hawd from north to south and east to west but didn’t settle it and that for a short while during the oromo expansions, there was a small galla penetration into the hawd and that the Darod wave from the north during the 17th to late 19th century completely extinguished.

The Oromo migrations never reach as far as Mudug. Oromos chiefly settled into Hararghe and the Juba-Tana area. They did invade Zeila thus would have likely passed through Hawd but they were promptly defeated and kicked out. The wikipedia claims Oromos owned the wells in Mudug area which is simply not reflected in any archeological, oral, written or genetic evidence.

Idk maybe it WAS a wandering Galla section, more than possible small bands of them penetrated the hawd. Gaal madow wars were happening at that time, also important to mention that Ogaden and MX and LKK move into the hawd and western mudug later around like the mid 17th century and come from up north, maybe it wasn’t as populated then as it is now, could be more than plausible that some Galla band just roamed through the Hawd and set themselves up there for a while.

I don’t buy the gaal madow=black camel theory. No Somali clan named gaal madow nor is there any recollection of them in the Somali oral traditions.
Ogaden where in that area first I heard I think they left Sanaag before the futuh al habash wars @Abaq you are right about LLK moving in later on though around the 17th century

Not large the large oromo nation but a wandering or cut off band, and not all of mudug, just the area between doolo and modern day Galkacyo. That’s the theory. Who else would these people in mudug be?

I just find it extremely unlikely that Mjs were trading blows with Oromos that somehow were controlling important sources like wells in the area. I'll ask @Idilinaa since she knows the most.

Are there any other Somali clans that are likely contenders? As far as I’m aware the country between doolo mudug and hobyo was pretty sparsely populated in those days.

Gaalkacyo means "Departure of Camels" it has no linkage to Oromo's and the Gaaleri clan was a story about a Somali clan that owned abundance of camels(Gaal/Geel).

Colonialist took the name Gaal and used it to infer Oromo's when they were were referring to a local clan, place name or camel.

Same thing with Gaal Madow, it's in refrence to a camel and a place name. You can see it in Virginia lulings reporting, its not in refrence to Oromos its refrence to animals.
Other names refer to the place where the village developed and may antedate the settlement ther: names recalling events in traditional history, such as the defeat of the Gaal Madow - Gaalgube ( burnt Gaal ) , Lafagaale ( bones of the Gaal ) ; or referring to animals or plants ,, like Bocorow (gourd place), Buulo Dacarta (aloe village), Caanoole ( place of milk ) , Buulo Waraabe ( hyena village ) , Libaaxle ( lion place )

Oromos didn't reach the Nothern central Somali plains during the Oromo migrations.

Then who were these camel Somalis who have vanished from history? And does gaaleri make sense as a nickname? Disperser of camels?

I've never heard of this silly camel theory. Not sure where it comes from.

Gaalkacyo got its name from the wars against the Galla, not some camel nonsense. Gallaeri is a also a reer bicidyahan, got its name from the same thing.
