I think both Pompey and Caesar would have been alive had Marcus Crassus (aka the richest man in Rome) wasn't killed in his moronic wars with Persia. The three men formed the first triumvirate post the third Servile War with Spartacus and his slave rebels. The the triumvirs agreed to share the Roman provinces between them and renewed their alliance twice but Crassus sought greater glory and attempted to conquer Syria and the Persian empire just to match Caesar's military victories. He failed miserably and died in the process without an heir (his son was killed by Spartacus).
