Theres people out there willingly ruinning our PR, have you seen the new captain phillips disney is cooking ?

Its about a somali king with a bantu name who invades a nigerian kingdom and tries to enslaves them, im not even joking search it up
LOL what? You’re lying.
Like I said, Somalia needs a pr team. People should be actively working hard to portray Somalia and Somalis well. But unfortunately Somalis are making AI videos of Somali grandmothers flying and saying Somalia has no sewer system.
And for some reason Hollywood has a vendetta against Somalia. We’re fucked

Our ancestors would speak of cannibals in the interior, wild untamed animals, even massive armies to discourage the Chinese treasure fleet that visited us. They discouraged the Persian shah Cambyses from attacking because of a bow. They would prevent Europeans from coming without a local Abaan (guide/leader).

They wanted to to discourage anyone from going to the interior of Somalia and from European and Asians going through the Red Sea and cutting them out from middleman trading in the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean.

The next century is African resources in the busy Red Sea, Arabian Sea, and Indian Ocean. Maybe a scary dangerous vibe would help discourage foreign investors and conglomerates from outcompeting locals.

This is a good thing. We need more fake reporting on brutal terrorists, pirating and some corrupt war lording.

Also countries generally get a good image thanks to billion dollar infrastructure projects, our gov cant even pay its own troops

Senegal is the perfect example for this, everyone sees them as the most advanced african country just because they dropped billions into urban planning of the capital city and built the only modern public transport system in sub saharan africa, search it up on youtube its actually really nice

despite that most of the country lives like it the rest of west africa, but all the rest of the world sees is this advanced modern and clean capital city tons of tourists go to visit each year

True but the Somali people could also work hard to spread positivity about somalia instead of acting like a trip back home is a punishment on social media.

The situation in Nigeria is deteriorating at a scary rate. And it’s not me saying it, it’s their Westiod overlords. They dropped 3 spots in a single year. Crazy stuff.

They still have a chance to change course.
And no Babatunde, not by scamming 79 year old whites, but by using the internet to bring real awareness and change. Real changes on the ground. Coping(like many users on here tend to do) won’t change anything.

Somalia was never a failed state tbh, we managed to fix our civil war and come up with a stable gov but the americans and ethiopia destabilized it in 2006, the ICU controlled more land than FGS today and it was ever expanding as Somalis from all regions supported it

the US also froze Somali bank accounts and caused our first famines in decades, the result of all this is the most corrupt government in the world that they continue to finance, FGS is the same government all somalis fought against in 2006
It wasn't even a civil war it was a proxy conflict and yet Somalis managed to stabilize it.

When they took down the ICU, they also dismantled the effective formal coast guards that were protecting Somalia’s territorial waters.

With no regulation or maritime oversight, foreign trawlers and vessels descended on Somali waters unchecked depleting fish stocks, polluting coastal areas, and even attacking local fishing boats.

This pushed entire coastal communities into poverty and desperation. It was made worse by the fact that Somalis couldn’t even access their own bank accounts or savings, which had been frozen.

That’s the context in which pirate nonsense labelling emerged from 2008 to 2012 not as a random criminal wave, but as a desperate response and form of resistance.

What they really derailed was an organic, bottom-up state-building process. In fact, if you think about it, the ICU had a stronger chance of long-term success than the Kacaan ever did because it was seen as culturally rooted and Islamic in nature. The Kacaan, by contrast, had a somewhat communist façade to it.

Even though the ICU was also seen by some as socialist, I think that really just shows how much of this cooperative, self-help, wealth-sharing ethic is actually rooted in Somali culture not imported ideology. What outsiders label as 'socialism' is, in many ways, just how Somali society naturally operates:

The ICU was simply unlucky to have emerged in the shadow of the War on Terror a global campaign that demonized Islamic political movements across the board, regardless of their local legitimacy or support.

The fact that they continue to finance the FGS despite its corruption tells you everything you need to know.

It’s like giving your sibling money to buy groceries for the whole family and she just pockets it. Would you keep giving her money? Of course not.

If they had allowed the ICU to bake, it could’ve represented a real, organic regime change one that actually had popular legitimacy. But it didn’t serve their political interests.

At least they let the private sector thrive that’s the only space they haven’t completely interfered in.

The entire public perception around Somalia is dominated by media and sensationalists who love to paint a grim picture about Somalia because tragedy and conflict will bring more views than talking about progress and change. Of course since none of them have stepped foot in Somalia nor record accurate data about it they don't know the reality of it like you do.

Theres people out there willingly ruinning our PR, have you seen the new captain phillips disney is cooking ?

Its about a somali king with a bantu name who invades a nigerian kingdom and tries to enslave them, im not even joking search it up

This will be the new captain phillips

That was some imaginary fantasy concept stuff some Somali troll made, it's not a real disney movie.

Im not really surprised if your a poor thrid world country the only example you can really point to is Somalia. We were a failed state for 3 decades and had 2 hugely successful negative movies made about us.

Those two movies were part of a broader narrative designed to demonize Somali resistance.

It really gets to the crux of the issue: if Somalia wants better global PR, it would have to become a tourist-friendly country run by foreign corporations, hand over control of key economic sectors to outside interests, and accept a puppet government that serves the agendas of global powers.

That’s the formula for 'good PR' in today’s world.

But Somalis have never been quick to give up sovereignty in exchange for a polished international image unlike those other countries. And let’s be honest the so-called international community has done very little to meaningfully support Somalia. Not a single Arab or African country backed Somalia during the Ogaden War or stepped up to help in the aftermath, despite all that Somalia had done to support others.

When Somalia was making real strides toward development, modernization, economic growth, and institution building, the international community instead glorified and allied themselves with Ethiopia: a country that, at the time, was impoverished, oppressive, and deeply underdeveloped. Yet they still sought to strengthen ties with its feudal regime. The fact that it was landlocked didn’t matter to them either.

They propped up illegitimate actors, fueled proxy wars, and no one came to Somalia’s defense when it was invaded in 2006. The UN didn’t protect our coastal communities they only showed up with warships to protect their own trade routes.

So why should we care about their view of us? Let them think the worst.

Let’s instead just quietly build a sustainable, Somali led future. In fact, that works in our favor. We don’t need to rely on heavy foreign investment. We can tap into our own diaspora , imagine a well-managed fund where Somalis abroad invest directly into the country. That alone could raise billions. Pair that with the proper exploitation of our natural resources, and we can build the capital base we need on our own terms.

We’ll have a country that works for us, by us, built by us, and led by us. That’s worth far more than foreign approval.

Somalia today is already the most self-reliant, commercially organized, and self-sustaining economy in all of Africa
