What would Somalia be like if civil war never happened?

I think that there might have been a bit of political unrest because of political grievances from when Siad Barre. Somalia would have had to adjust back to democratic rule. The economy would be hit but it would be temporary and it would be back to normal. There could've been more transparency aswell since there would've been a multi party system.

If we had the same government in place from 1960, the peaceful government all Somalis instilled post colonialism, we’

Great post saxib. Also we would be a leader in clean energy with solar and wind capabilities. I’m mad we don’t take advantage of that now
Somalia wasn't rosy in the 60s at all. I'm not putting this thread in the clan section. Don't confuse the waqooyi with the south.

Thanks, I realized I didn’t expand on my original point LOL had to edit it out. And what was wrong in the 60’s? From my understanding we were a united nation back then with no gobol wars. It’s impressive that the Adan Osman Daar was the first head of state in Africa to peacefully transfer power.

Get outta here you Habshit! :camby:

If he stepped down peacefully and allowed a democratic election, civil war wouldn't even be in the minds of Somalis and they would've destroyed Ethiopia and took back their lands and that's why you thank God that Somalia destroyed themselves before they had a chance to destroy you.

If the civil war didn’t take place Somalia would’ve still been divided by clans lines. The clans that felt cheated out in the election would have formed rebel group that would pretty inspire other clans to form their own rebels. You would still have alshabab problems since the people that came after the dictator are all religious nuts and your country would’v become a war ravaged poor country.

To be quite honest the civil war was inevitable.

I already mentioned Somalis would have become self-sufficient in electricity usage. Yes, you're right Somalia woul've possibly be leading renewable energy for Africa and possibly the world.

Somalia has one of the most windiest places in the world.

Did you know just one thousand wind turbines could produce enough electricity for the whole residence of Somalia?

Somalia is a very sunny nation and Somaliland has one of the most sunniest places in Africa.

My dream is make Somalia 0% poverty meaning every single residential home will have a solar panel including other buildings and outside the city where we can contruct an ocean full of solar panels.

Somalia has the longest coast in Africa where the water level has strong waves meaning we can take advantage of our wave energy. Our coastal cities can heavily benefit from this as it can produce enormous amount of electricity.

With all this then Somalia can supply electricity to its neighbouring countries since we would be full of it even though we can expand our electricity into uranium and hydraulic energy with our rivers. :damn:

Somalis are so blessed but qabil seems to be more interesting than making money and gains. :ivers:

Lack of civil war does not necessarily mean good governance. There are many peaceful but poorly governed and therefore poor and hellish countries.

All the rosy scenarios written about in this thread assume that a Somalia without a civil war would have had good governance, which is not the case. Since independence, Somalia has been poorly governed, including during the democratic era where corruption was extremely common. Most African countries are similarly poorly governed, with a handful of exceptions like Botswana which had great post-independence leaders who really shaped the form of politics in their country.

A Somalia without a civil war would look alot like present day Somaliland. Yes, it's "peaceful" (at least mostly), but it's poorly governed, very corrupt, and not a great place to live.

So I think the conversation should shift away from just focusing on peace or lack of war and focus on good governance. And this does not necessarily mean democracy either.

Didn't you blame the poverty of Bantu countries on Colonialism and Western interference?

Imagine if every poster on here was like factz. Man Somalia would have a great idea and we could enforce all of this. Factz should be president of Somalia, I don't care!

It was a coup done by Siad Barre.
I have heard that rumour before and it does sound plausible but you can't say for certain unless proof surfaces. I also heard Siad Barre made the interim president after the death of Sharmarke step down just after few days of taking office.

What do you guys think if Siad Barre peacefully stepped out of office and allowed a democratic election to take place?

What would Somalia be like today? No derailing please, the truth is if Siad Barre stepped out of office then there would be no civil war. So I don't want any qabils or any negativity, just tell me what would Somalia be like? @Bohol please keep on eye on these fools if they try to derail the thread and not willing to be intellectually honest.

I think Mogadishu would look like this if the civil war never happened.

Anyone who disagrees is an idiot. People from all tribes should agree that he stopped all this from being a reality.

The country would have looked great, there would be a greater amharic population in Somalia tho but that would be due to us needing guys to work on our farms and in our waste management plants. We would be wearing suits by day and macwiis by the evening, taking our wives and kids for a stroll on the beach.

25 year olds would have 2 wifes and their eldest kid would be at least 7 years old. You would own at least one house, 2 great cars and have a great job/business.

Something that is usually misconstrued by most Somalis is that our Economy was huge during the Siad Barre era. Although the country was stable and had a powerful military the regime depended heavily on foreign aid from the Soviets then the US. Infrastructure outside the major towns was also poor. The fact that most cities grew a ton after the Barre is an example.

During the civil war the GDP didn't drop massively but stayed somewhat the same. This shows that if there was stability in somalia throughout the 90s and early 2000s there would've been massive development throughout the country and not just Xamar. Somalia would be in a great place in 2018 if peace and stability remained throughout the land. There's a possibility of Somalia selling oil making it even richer than what I think. It really sucks that we're in this situation :francis:

Somalia was already ahead of those countries in the 70s and 80s. Eritrea was war-torn and in shambles around the time Siad was over-thrown. If there was a peaceful transfer of power somewhere in the late 80s what makes you think Somali would be no better than Eritrea??

The GDP per capita in Somalia before the war was depending on how you calculate our GDP per capita now 2-10x higher than it is now. It worth remembering that in countries with socialist economies , resources are not used as efficiently than they could have.
I think that had Somalia not had a civil war our GDP per capita would be somewhere in the region of 3000-6000$ per person which would qualify it as a middle income country. Reliant of course of the abandonment of the socialist policies that the government had before the war.

Still there would have been blood to pay. Baare already killed a lot of qabisl, Isaaqs mostly so, i guess Somalia had to pay for the sins and blood Baare shed.

You wouldn't be alive if it weren't for the civil war. Everything that happened in the past needed to be that way in order for you to be born in the circumstance you were born in.

I am proud of the civil war because if it didn't happen, my parents wouldn't have met in the US and birthed me.

That's a sacrafice I would gladly take if Somalia can be great.
