We didn’t become a shithole in 1990. However much everyone tries to big up the Kacaan era. We were still a shithole in the 80’s we just became a lawless shithole.

I'm well aware of Somalia being a shithole prior to the 90's. It has been a shithole ever since the government was stupid enough to invade Ethiopia in 77.
Kacaan was the reason for what Somalia has become. That one war destroyed Somalia's economy and it's reputation to the rest of the communist world for attacking another fellow commi/socialist. Among the largest f*ck ups in African history in my opinion.

Thread isn't really about the country of Somalia but all Somalis everywhere.
What mindset/ideology is holding back Somaliland in your opinion? Besides the lack of recognition (too predicable).
Somalia was a shit hole prior to the '77 war just like every other African country which were uninhabitable at that point except maybe South Africa and other white ruled parts of Africa.
The war was wholly justified though I still think Barre should've taken that deal with the Soviets. If it meant freeing Somali land that fell under artificial borders created by careless pricks then that war was justified. They were not treating Somalis in the Ogaden humanely and that alone should be enough to warrant a war. Falling under the commie block and allowing the spread of socialism was the stupidest thing Barre ever allowed.
