MeltdownMy main responsibility is to live my best life as much as possible with family and friends. So f*ck you and your "iT'S yOur ResPOnsibILity" bullshit. I will learn Somali whenever i'm free to. I have many things to be worrying about, and many responsibilities. Learning Somali is not one of them.

I honestly think somali parents and people in the diaspora should start establishing somali schools for kids to learn the mother tongue. Turkish people in my area take their kids to Turkish school to teach them their language and culture. Us somalis should follow suit and do the same. It's beneficial and it's a MUST for somalis to know somali. It's embarassing if you don't.
It's truly a shame that even when we try to help somali youth reconnect with their culture and roots it never works out. Why the hell would you send your child to an arabic school over a Somali one smh.Yaskaaa
What happened, are you comparing Turkish people to Somalis? I knew of a Burmese kid in primary school who every weekend travelled 25km to a Burmese language school to the other end of town because then, their numbers were very few. We’d 1000’s of Somalis clustered in a 5-10 km radius and the Somali school was closed because of lack of enrolment. Instead, most Somali parents sent their kids to a Saturday Arabic language school. The Turks are proud of their history and language. We can’t even agree on establishing a united Somali organisation, let alone a school. My parents banned other languages at home. Only Somali was spoken. It worked.

Who wrote that to you?Not that long ago, I received a post on my wall from an SSpot member stating that I should "go back to Somalia if I cared so much about the Somali culture and language."
This made me think about the current attitudes diaspora Somalis have towards the Somali language.
Is it inherently wrong if you never bothered to learn the language?[/QUOTE
Interesting, my folks tried the same thing but it didn’t work. Then again there wasn’t much of anyone to speak it with but themYaskaaa
