I'm a student in College and I've been thinking about something, I was having a lively discussions with immigrant communities, by far most 1st generation immigrants or 2nd generation immigrants don't come here to stay but come here to get an education, money, and a business idea. They go back to their native lands to advance it. I think this is far nobler than the Somali Guys and Girls who decide to marry out of their ethnicity and make a home for themselves in their respective host countries, assimilating into an alien country. We have far too many my people the Somalis who are ignorant and self-hating. Also, the few people are going back are going back to help their dusty tuulos because they are qabilists to the core, instead of advancing the nation as a whole they are advancing their dusty tuulos. Likewise, there are those with education who go back to take advantage of the people, they have degrees and experiences and use this for evil. They get a political position and get fat off of the common people and sellout their nation's. A good example is American Educated Farmajo called Armajo which is fitting for he is seeking revenge on the citizens of Mogadishu. With a Degree in History and Political Science Farmajo is no Engineer. I don't like politics though and want nothing to do with it. All graduating Somalis of High Schools instead of asking themselves what degrees will help me they should be asking themselves what Degree will help my Nation. While I would list all the degrees helpful to the Nation I cannot now for this is a special project I'm currently working on. Once I get the project up and ready I will be more willing to give away all my information.
What degrees do you think will help the Nation. For me I would pick Degrees for the Agricultural Sector, Food & Nutrition Sector, all Engineering Degrees, Environmental Degrees, etc...

All STEM subjects are essential for Somalia or your gobol; but I would say any degree as long as you can teach what you learnt over there.

Avoid political sciences like the plague and also bro make an introduction thread you seem to be a weed grower I have many questions to ask.:patrice:

Alright sxb, welcome to the forum. For future reference if you plan to write a large paragraph consider making sub paragraphs to make things a whole lot easier to read and follow.

Honestly its not really what degree can help Somalia but more about what skill set you have which can be tailored to a specific role in the development process. As you mentioned an Environmental Engineering degree would be perfect for a country like Somalia since it is in dire need of proper water & agriculture planning.

One advice I would give you since you are a college student is that, once you have obtained your bachelors don’t run to Somalia immediately. First gain some industry experience or pursue a Masters and specialize in a topic. You don’t want to end up in Somalia with no experience attempting to change things since that would do more harm than good.

Anyways I like your initiative and the drive you have. Just keep working hard and hopefully, you will have a positive impact in your future endeavors.

You do you first. Pick a degree that you will enjoy, that has good career prospects, and will pay well. You can help out later when you become an accomplished profeasional/entrepreneur.

I agree. The sad fact is most of our professionals decide not to help and assimilate into the West. not all most most. The things is if one doesn't enjoy Accounting or Engineering one cannot possibly do it. There are very difficult physics and mathematics classes in any Engineering Degree that one who doesn't enjoy math can't hope to do.

You can do anything at it will be incredibly valuable. I am even talking about skilled trades like electrical, carpentry, and plumbing. Just find something you like, that will pay well, and will leave you skilled. And be ambitious too.

And like I said before, You do you first.

Also a degree in Soil Sciences never under estimate a B.S. in Soil Sciences. Soil in Somalia today is full of chemicals due to the various wars, lead from the bullets, uranium form bombs, etc... There is something called Soil Remediation using mushrooms and certain plants that attract heavy metals and pharmaceuticals in the soil. I think I'm going to do a double major in Soil Science and Botany (My Love) and a minor in Nutrition (My other Love).

The Soil in Somalia is malnourished just like its people are. The Soil lacks nutrients, especially minerals like Zinc and Magnesium there was this study in the 1980's that proved the lack of zinc and magnesium in the soil.

I agree with what you wrote as a whole. But we have to be realistic: considering the current political situation, one can be of most help to the part of the country from which he hails, also taking into account that your business is far more protected. So, develop your tuulo and I'll develop mine.

But ideally it is as you describe.

Yes, Somalia's security is questionable. Currently but it is the Youth's chance to change that it is our duty as Somali Diasporas to be the guiding light to those who are in Somalia, but much of these diasporas are more qabilste then the ones living I'm Somalia like Dabacasir and Dahir Culusow.
