How bad was it. Did it sow the seeds for disaster?
How did the majority of somalis feel after the war?
Could it be possible to reclaim it?

It was a noble war but failure cost us a lot. But entering the war to fight for the freedoms of Somali land and people can never be avoided whatever the cost. The only regrets somalis should have was that they didn't rebuild the state strong enough to come back for round 2.

Siad barre rushed into the war with Ethiopia. He should have been patient. after the war somali nationalism collapsed as an ideology

If only bro waited a couple years and fully secured American support. Such a "little" thing could've changed the fate forever :mjcry:

But maybe this is just a minor hiccup. Somalia got xooged but we don't have it too bad in the grand scheme of things, rock bottom is far from us considering what others went through.

yh i felt like it was way rushed. A few more months with experienced generals and we there couldve been a different fate ahead of us.

It was perfectly planned and executed if the battlefield remained one between two African regional powers. Nobody foresaw a whole superpower intervening, there was nothing Somalia could have done in such a situation but withdraw.

Even the US had to withdraw after China’s Second Offensive in 1950, or look at Russia today getting bogged down because of American military largesse boosting Ukrainian resistance. There is a level of intervention or interference that superpowers wield that can trouble even a great power let alone a small country with a 3 million population like 1970s Somalia.

The best move would have been to just focus on factories, shipyards, super ports and oil fields until you reach a level where your neighbours are so far behind you, the quest for unification would become a walk in the park.

Tbf, there was always the very real possibility that the USSR would side with Ethiopia since Somalia was the aggressor

Somalia should have used WSLF as a Proxy to continue waging a guerrilla campaign in Bale & Sidama mountains. We made the mistake of using the National Army to capture arid villages when Ethiopia troops were camped in their hilltops with sophisticated weapons.

We should've focused on development. Pushing ourselves to become the pinnacle of strength and development in the Horn would've been better. Arming and pushing for local conflicts would've help justify us marching in. In stead of looking like an invasion we'd use the general inability of the Ethiopians to manage rising tensions as an excuse. Stating we're ensuring the safety of all ethnic Somalis from ethnic violence.

The Ethiopians to this day are still on the brink but unfortunately we're not at a stage where we can take advantage. However I still feel like Ethiopia will balkanise, there's simply too much distrust and ethnic violence to hold it together long.

Seems like it had good intentions behind it but it was a failure in the end. It also can be argued it led to the civil war as Ethiopia started arming rebel group in Somalia which resulted in Siyaad barre being overthrown.
