I am working with the government and several NGOs to see if a sanctuary can be opened in Somaliland. Unfortunately it is very expensive to maintain so we need to find funding.

Any hopes that the wild life will return to Somalia? :mjcry:

Not true, I saw plenty of different species of gazelle, as well as ostriches and not to mention the infamous hyena when your out in the country side.

Ostriches are most common in togdheer, somali wildlife is still buzzing its just that we lost a lot of the predatory animals as well as the elephants, where hargeisa is today was once a area frequented by elephants, its in the name, maroodi jeexa.

Because of the many stories i heard during my childhood about what happened to all the wildlife animals made me assume that theres virtually none. But is interesting as you mentioned that hyenas still exist do you know what location? and is unfortunate that somaliland used to attract a lot of wildlife species one day we'll retireve our animals back

Hyenas are rampant, if your outside at night especially away from big cities you'll encounter them.

I was confronted by 2 on a street in the town of arabsiyo around 15km from hargeisa.

I saw lots of monkeys too, and turtles.

I would like the Somali giraffes to come back but their all in Kenya.
:damn:
We used to have elephants too ...

I've never seen a hyena but heard their about, they look nasty.

Cool i always thought they all moved down to harar since hyenas is one of Ethiopias attractions. When i was in Hargeisa coming out of mansoor hotel the only animals that came at night time was dogs. and you must have panicked when the hyenas confronted you i wouldnt even know how to react.

Loool are you mad I legged it when I saw it staring at me I could only see the shadow I was praying to Allah it was a donkey but when I flashed my torch on it, I ran for it and jumped into a random guri that had a open roof.

It was eid night, they must have smelled all of the animal entrails and blood soaked up in the sand after everyone was eating lamb.

The problem is that there is no wildlife sanctuary in Somalia, and these animals could be from anywhere in Ethiopia, Somalia or Kenya. Also, they were taken so young that they would not be able to survive in the wild on their own.
