For a small group of people, Somalis are heavily into fraud compared to other minorities who are 5x larger. There’s no defending this no matter how much you wanna down play this.

Somalis are not more scamming, but there are a handful of frauds in that specific field, which I think is being investigated with a fine-toothed comb due to earlier cases. Other people are defrauding to a much higher degree in other avenues. All we see here is that the government trusted these scammers to have more freedom internally to take care of the community without even checking how they spend it directly. Over time, you had a few people succumbing to their greed, thinking there is no one noticing if a few coins end up redirected somewhere else.

Somalis are high trust when it comes to business and economic chains -- to manage such delicate informal systems -- one cannot be a scamming people. In everyday scenarios, the average person tries to make the same loopholes and systemic shortcuts as everyone else using the system.

Still, taking money from children's health systems is wicked. But that should only be directed at the guys doing the deeds.

But let's be real, if you have traveled around the world, on a ground level, I think Somalis are the most decent and upfront on transactional matters with respect for your private property and space, while you might have your whole shit taken in other countries, and people trying to push for the margins to constantly squeeze and scam you. You don't have to look over your shoulder in that regard among Somalis than in other places.

Now, people might point to political corruption. It's a whole other bag.

~70 individuals had been charged, with 37 pleading guilty (mostly non-Somalis), and whilst many are Somalis, a large proportion (more than half) are presumed non-Somalis mostly of Oromo extraction, many claiming of being ethnic Somalis. In total, ~33 defendants are of Somali extraction.

Now, let us do the numbers:

Presumed Somalis: ~33

The real problem imo is the amount of money the U.S. federal government gave away during covid without proper oversight. People got 3 stimulus checks for thousands of dollar which they used for the meme stock frenzy, PPE loans, child nutrition programs, etc. all of that led to abuse. There are former professional athletes in jail because of pandemic funding fraud. I don’t think there was any stimulus in Canada or Europe thus you don’t see these kind of issues there. They also wrote off the loans they gave to big corporations and millionaires/billionaires during covid which they won’t have to pay back but of course they will always go after the little guy.

As for the “council house” talking point . I’ve addressed this before. It’s really just borrowed outrage from poor white Brits who scapegoat Somalis over housing shortages, when the reality is their government stopped building council housing decades ago and speculators drove rents through the roof.

Many Somalis got social housing on arrival during refugee resettlement, and once you’re in, you stay , even if your income goes up. That’s just how the UK system works. Somalis in Ohio are far from “dead broke.” A lot of them have built solid professional careers, run successful businesses, and even have elected officials in state legislatures like Munira and Ismail. Many families have already moved out to the suburbs ,they’re not just sitting around in “projects” like you’re trying to paint it.

In terms of self-employment and entrepreneurship, about 1 in 5 Somali Americans is a business owner, according to the Somali American Chambers of Commerce. Ohio alone has 15,000 Somali-owned businesses, representing a business ownership rate of 20% much higher than the U.S. average of 6% and the immigrant average of 10%.
