According to the scholars of the city, its name is derived from the Arabic words megaad-ech-cháta (station of the sheep).

What about the sheikh's seat? (مقعد الشيخ ) The sultans of Mogadishu use the sheikh to describe themselves, and I have not heard of a sultan of Mogadishu bearing the name Shah

The meaning of Mogadishu's name is uncertain. Some render it as a Somali version of the Arabic "maqad shah," or "imperial seat of the shah," thus hinting at a Persian role in the city's founding.

Does this have an authenticity?

It's nothing more than folk etymology. The name mogadishu is nearly a millennia old name that hasn't change whatsoever and even the name xamar was mentioned by al-dimashqi. This claim is akin to someone claiming that yemen is from the english phrase yeah man.

In somali?
Very observant of you for indeed xamar might sound arabic but in reality it's a somali word. There are many other geographical places in somaliweyn that carries the name xamar. What's even funnier is that their is an actual ogaden sub clan called reer xamar meaning it's nothing exclusive to the reer xamar of mogadishu nor is it of foreign origin. Now what does it mean? Well it means a number of things but i only remember that xamar is the word we use for tamarind or as it's also called in somali raqay

Xamar was originally founded by arabs. Xamar means reddish soil in the arabic language. Xamar means nothing in af Somali. Xamar was founded by arabs in the 9th century. Somali nomads particularly reer abgaal came to the city in the early 1900s.
