Forty-seven farmers were killed in 2017-18, according to statistics compiled by AgriSA, an association of hundreds of agricultural associations across South Africa. This is consistent with a steady decline since a peak of violence in 1998 when 153 died.

Between 80 and 100 were murdered each year from 2003 to 2011, and around 60 until 2016.

Why aren't Somalis who live in urban areas in South Africa get killed? The murder rate in the poverty ridden shanty towns is alarmingly high and they could have avoided starting a business in those places and getting killed. Most of the Somali owners of these businesses and their families live in major cities and towns and employ newly arrived young Somalis to South Africa who are desperate to make a buck and work in their stores in the shanty towns. These unnecessary deaths could've been avoided by pooling their resources together and starting decent sized super-markets in the urban areas. You can't just walk into the middle of a war-zone and expect to make money and come out unscathed. Let them get out of the shanty-towns. Most Somalis in South Africa live in the urban areas and they are safer than those who live in the United States or United Kingdom.
