All patriotic and nationalistic Somalis desire the liberation of Somali Galbeed, what is now known as the Somali occupied part of Ethiopia. This desire will not go away or be suppressed as long as the Somali people of that region retain their identity as Somalis. The uprising of Somalis is not surprising given the long history of oppression and genocide against them by the Habesha led governments centred in Addis Ababa.
The false hope given by article 39 of the Ethiopian constitution to grant nationalities the right to secede has lulled many ethnic groups into a false sense of nationhood. While gains were made in devolving some power to the regions allowing them to use their languages, and spreading some goodies the blatant truth is that Ethiopia is still a Habesha dominated country, a centralised, brutal regime backed by a strong military and strong Western allies.
This was made clear in terms of the oil sharing revenue made by Ahmed Abiy, granting a minuscule percentage of oil revenues found in the Somali region to the Somalis, while the Habesha took 90 percent. When it comes to resources, the message is clear.The oil belongs to them. Or any other resources for that matter.
While Abdi Iley has caused more suffering for his people than good, the current uprising is larger than him, and is deep rooted in Habesha colonialism and oppression of Somalis.If he has the guts and backing to take the war to the Habesha, then all Somalis have an obligation to support him, for the greater good of Somali liberation from Habesha. A war against Ethiopia is obligatory for all patriotic Somalis.
The challenges the Somalis face are still numerous. They have to face the might of the Ethiopian Army. They may not have the support of many regions in Ethiopia. Their kinsmen and natural supporters, ie Somalia and Djibouti are too weak to offer backup.The leadership skills of Abdi Iley in sustaining a long war and getting external support are unknown. Possible external supporters like Egypt and Turkey may secretely salivate at the prospect of dismembering Ethiopia, but they don't have a history of overt intervention in Somali affairs, especially in Somali territories outside the Republic. The AU and Igad will side with Ethiopia. So will the Arabs.
Nonetheless, uprisings have their own internal logic and can be sustained and succeed if the right ideology and leadership are available to nurture and sustain it.

May God grant our Somali brothers in Ethiopia success against the oppressive Ethiopian regime.

The only salvation possible right now for him is for the Tigray regional state to announce their secession and pave the road for other oppressed regions to do the same.. but the western donors won't allow Ethiopia to disintegrate into smaller nations that hold no political or economical weight.

The Tigray have played Iley for a fool, urging him to confront the Ethiopian Empire, and pledging their support, but they have betrayed him. As usual it is the Somali people paying the price. He should have waited for the Tigray and Afar to make the first move.
All he has done now is to give the Ethiopian Empire the excuse to diminish the gains of federalism and return the old Ethiopian stranglehold on Somali Galbeed.

I'm under no illusions about external support to the Somali uprising. I have already touched on this. It's a bleak scenario.

But you're wrong about Ethiopia ' s eventual disintegration. The forces of disintegration, just like in Yougoslavia, are simmering under the Ethiopian fabric. It's just a matter of time

Independence for this region will be hard and costly, many people will die but it'll eventually happen inshallah. Right now, Somlais are not in a position to construct a greater Somalia. It's impossible, each region is poor and weak, and is occupied in one way or another, including proper Somalia. What should be done is to make sure each somali region is free and governs itself, that should be the first goal. Second, all somali regions should coorperate with each other instead of seeing each other as enemies.

Once you do that, in no time, we will be in a position to unite and form a somaliwayn and if it doesn't happen, having four of five somali regions in the horn governed and inhabited by Somalis is great also.

Abdi Iley has resigned and been replaced by the young Axmed Cabdi Ilkacase, from the Ogaadeen clan. He was the finance minister for DDSI and hails from Nogob.

It's seems likely that he will be a transitional figure while Abiy looks for a more pliable man, unless he proves himself to be loyal.

We are back to square one in Somali Galbeed.
