The age of misinformation.

Is it just me and I know this isn’t new, but isn’t just scary how false information and facts are being spread and a good % of the population simply believe it?

Or how someone can be hated for doing nothing but the masses think they know you because constant articles?

People are getting dumber, well a good majority are so I expect this to happen more and more. Especially as we near yawmul qiyaamah. All the truth is being hidden by the mass proliferation of the lies spread by corporations and individuals with power.

People aren’t making an effort to seek the truth in droves for all facets of life to get the facts. It takes an overwhelming life event including but not limited to health issues or mental exhaustion for people to do their own fact checking. Which I don’t blame them for. Many are overworked, lack sleep and proper self-care.

We should stick stubbornly to diin and pray we don’t become like them. Trust in Allah

Most people just lack critical thinking to be honest and is not something taught in school

people don't even read the articles fully they just see the headline and comment automatically.
Yes, this is it. Tabloids are the kings of click-bate. they’ll create a title that will cause some sort of outrage. The general population will then just read the title which generates controversy, yet the actual content of the article could actually paint another picture.

Another issue is that a large portion of people get their information about facts from Instagram and TikTok. I don’t have an issue with TikTok and other avenues being a vehicle of knowledge, but you’d think people would actually have enough common sense to also cross reference what they learn and actually research it, instead of taking the facts and statistics that are thrown by YouTubers and Tiktokers. That is how redpill and pink pill has spread.

Lack of critical thinking being developed in schools. You only need to use covid as a case study to show how stupid half the population is. Dunning kreuger effect in motion.

Good topic.

I have noticed a strong trend from 2018 to now of accusing Somali Macalin Dugsi(Quranic teachers) in Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia of rapping young children. I found most of these allegations to have been fake and made up.

There is an agenda pushed by foreign entities and their Somali agents to destroy the reputation and value of our Islamic teachers and to close Quran learning institutions in Somalia.

Question:

I’m not in Africa and you’re not as well.

How do we know these allegations are fake?

Why would a child lie? Can children even have the ability to lie about such things?

How do we know what you posted is accurate?

Where did you get it from? Is it an outside body or the defending party?

Many of these cases have been taken to court, so are the courts, police, children ect all lying? Based on what? What is your proof?

I ask this because we need to be careful about not just accusations but also accusations of claiming CHILDREN are lying.

If someone’s child in Somali is molested, how do they get justice? Bearing in mind people have their houses and land stolen from them and they don’t have yet justice as well?

I ask this because we need to be careful about not just accusations but also accusations of claiming people are lying.

I'm not rubbishing the possibility of a teacher rapping his pupils, but most of the reports we have received so far were suspicious.

1. ‘People’ who are those people? Are they connected to the macaalins, the defending party?

2. Who is this journalist? Journalists often have differing opinions. You’ll find journalists that say the opposite.

3. Why should I believe you, over a trusted article which states that police and courts are involved along with child testimony?

4. Do you believe that children can lie about such things? Especially in a society like Somalia in which children are shielded.

5. In Galmudug, they are now thinking of segregating female students and giving them separate female teachers. That is how it should be and fathers should not be taking their daughters to dug so with male teachers and leaving them there.

6. Where is your evidence they’re trying to get rid of dugsi when it states here;

Puntland, which is one of the places where such cases happen, recently the women’s ministry said that it is thinking of creating separate schools for girls with female teachers.

6. Having male macaalins teach little girls isn’t a good thing, especially when schools in Somali and dugsis aren’t regulated. Every country with money whether it is Saudi or UK have a regulation body that ensures the safety of children. Somalia does not currently have that.

1. They are absolutely neutral.

2. Reliable, as far as I know, he is not into politics, and reports about sports most of the time.

3. Rape cases like this happen I'm not denying that, but there is a lot of propaganda that follows. this particular case I'm talking about was falsified and the so-called Macalin who admitted to having raped the children was not even a real teacher.

4. Yes, I believe children and parents can lie if they were given money, some random man can even pretend to be a teacher.

5. I didn't say Puntland or any Somali administration is trying to get rid of Dugsi teachers, I said there is propaganda to kill the reputation of the Dugsi teachers for the people to abandon this traditional practice of sending kids to Dugsi Quran.

6. I don't see any issues with male Macalin dugsis teaching small girls. There were reports(some of them fake) of teachers rapping small girls as well as boys so this is not only girls issue.

As far as you know. Also, reporters like everyone can also be influenced by biases ect. Did he see parents collecting payment ect? That would be interesting.

Was the r-word fake or him being a teacher? Or was it both?
4. Yes, I believe children and parents can lie if they were given money, some random man can even pretend to be a teacher.
I have a hard time believing this in the context of traditional Somali culture, which is why critical thinking is important.

If a girl is r-worded in Somali culture, it will be hard for her to marry. I highly doubt a poor hooyo/abo would jeopardize that. Marriage is like currency, it is a financial protection for women and fathers that are struggling would often encourage daughters to marry so they have less mouth to feed.

I don’t need to tell you how a boy that is r-worded would be perceived. What do you think?

Knowing how Somali culture values honor and ‘ceeb’ is avoided at all cost, how am I to believe that parents lying and potentially destroying their children’s future is common?

I’m not saying it never happens. In every group there are always going to be people that deviate from the norm, but I can’t see this being common. Parents would have too much to loose.

5. I didn't say Puntland or any Somali administration is trying to get rid of Dugsi teachers, I said there is propaganda to kill the reputation of the Dugsi teachers for the people to abandon this traditional practice of sending kids to Dugsi Quran.
Somalis need regulation. You have that in every non Third world country. Macaalins should have their background checked. You can’t be sending your kids off to anywhere. InshaAllah once we have money that would be the norm.
6. I don't see any issues with male Macalin dugsis teaching small girls. There were reports(some of them fake) of teachers rapping small girls as well as boys so this is not only girls issue.
I do, especially when we know that sexual abuse against kids is rife. Why would you risk your daughter in that way? I’m not saying that women don’t abuse, but statistically men are much more likely. At the very least they should have women in the premises as well. You don’t see Arabs or other Muslim groups do this. They segregate and for good reasons.

Also, Somalis need to start being a lot more organized. Even Muslim countries have some sort of background checks for teachers. And it’s to prevent stuff like this and will be a protection for little boys as well.

You opened this thread for us to discuss why nowadays people are naive and so prone to believe misinformation. I presented with you a case of misinformation in Somalia and what I think of it.

Don't get me wrong, I do not condone rape. I believe rapists are disgusting people and should receive the most severe of punishments.

Yes, according to him, he interviewed the parents of the 3 girls which were said to have been rapped, and they said their children were not rapped.
