Somalis in America need to recognize that the U.S. is the ultimate opportunity card and embrace and defend their American identity. We've been part of the American story since the early 1900s, contributing not just in business or politics but in critical scientific and medical fields. Somalis have held senior roles such as deputy science directors at NASA research centers and the position as chief medical officer.

Every immigrant group has gone through cycles of media and political scrutiny , the Chinese, Japanese, Jewish, Irish, and others. But they made the most of America, used its systems to advance themselves, and didn’t turn their backs on their identity.

Look at Italian Americans: despite facing intense backlash in the early 20th century, they stayed rooted in both their American and Italian identities. They sent millions in remittances and played a major role in supporting their homeland from abroad.

In 2013 alone, Somali Americans sent $570 million back to Somalia and that figure is likely far higher now in 2025, not including direct foreign investment.

America truly remains the land of opportunity , it’s up to us to seize it and leverage it to benefit both our communities here and our homeland.
This was a really informative and well written post

I just read this article the American economy consistently outperforms the G7

It's because they are the single largest and most active diaspora in the western world, so every little thing that happens gets put under a microscope and quantify that by the raging republicans as well.

There is 99% more good than bad happening, they are graduating university in higher numbers, they start businesses in high numbers, they host the largest professional network, they are by far the largest diaspora investors to the greater Somali regions and they have the biggest political clout and influence in the western diaspora.

They should continue marching forward and ignore the noise because they are doing big things.

This White American laying down the reality behind how hard working Somalis in Minnesota are and how much they contribute in diverse sectors of the local economy. He has been living amongst them and is always confused at how people online find issue with them.

There’s so much wealth circulating in the American economy it really does feel like it’s up for grabs. Sometimes, you’re just one good business idea away from becoming a millionaire.

But at the same time, because of the lax regulations and oversight, it’s also easy to fall into pitfalls or worse, be tempted into fraud or abuse.

Honestly, I was shocked at how widespread and normalized corporate fraud is. It really baffled me. I doubt you’d see it to the same extent anywhere else.
