This was a really informative and well written postSomalis in America need to recognize that the U.S. is the ultimate opportunity card and embrace and defend their American identity. We've been part of the American story since the early 1900s, contributing not just in business or politics but in critical scientific and medical fields. Somalis have held senior roles such as deputy science directors at NASA research centers and the position as chief medical officer.
Every immigrant group has gone through cycles of media and political scrutiny , the Chinese, Japanese, Jewish, Irish, and others. But they made the most of America, used its systems to advance themselves, and didn’t turn their backs on their identity.
Look at Italian Americans: despite facing intense backlash in the early 20th century, they stayed rooted in both their American and Italian identities. They sent millions in remittances and played a major role in supporting their homeland from abroad.

In 2013 alone, Somali Americans sent $570 million back to Somalia and that figure is likely far higher now in 2025, not including direct foreign investment.

America truly remains the land of opportunity , it’s up to us to seize it and leverage it to benefit both our communities here and our homeland.
