Copper theft and smuggling pretty much happen all over the world. It's most prevalent in Europe, South Africa and North America believe it or not it is done illegally outside the purview of the govt
The demand for copper is soo high that people are willing to tear down infrastructure and vandalize just to get some.

Didn't they have to reduce the amount of copper American nickels were made of because people realized the copper used to make the coin was worth more than the coin and then began melting them down and just selling the copper? Absolutely wild, to be honest.

A lot of the money goes into local economy and provides income for the people and supports their livelihood, just like the livestock trade does but most of the trade problem lies with the informal nature of it where it might harm the environment, be of subject to exploitation black markets etc and were Alshabaab is targetting it they generate revenue by taxing it 30% selling price and 40% cost price. Because of the unofficial trade we don't know the true estimates of the revenue from it.
The fault lies on the weak Puntland and Somaliland governments due to their limited institutional capability to regulate and control gold mining and exports.

The news yesterday that Berbera port is booming hurt the haters of Somaliland. They had to throw some dirt on the name of Berbera.

I stumbled across this when I was in somaliland looking to make money.
Apparently there are dozens mining operations most of them artisinal and small scale.
The locals are robbed because they are getting payed peanuts, and there is fierce competition from the buyers .
The market is crazy and all mostly underground some are officially registered and pay tax to the government.
I was shocked to hear from someone from the government that approximately $100 million worth of gold was mined and exported from somaliland in the last 5 years alone.
This is only from the operations the government knows about and taxes.
Naturally after this I dived all in, for the last months been planning and I leave next month .
The country is full of virgin deposits of high quality.
We have rare earth's like niobium, tantalum the country is full of them.
I've tested 2 different deposits myself.
And gold the country is full of gold, I've seen 5 deposits.

what’s the government doing since they basically admitted that they’re being robbed broad daylight .
Goverment doesn't care, for those that want to go the legal way or illegal . They get taxes and admin fees, or the one in charge at the time gets a fat bribe.
The locals are getting fleeced wallahi, we offered them more than double the amount and we still expect a fat profit.
