Somalis studying Law

How often do you guys see Somalis studying Law? It feels like all the people I meet are studying Business, Medicine, Engineering, Media, etc. I'm the only Somali in my field at the university I attend (where I sometimes see other Somalis) and when I ask, none of them seem to have interest in it. Is it like this where you guys are at? :hmm:

Depends which university you go to here.

If you go to Uni of Melbourne, Uni of Sydney or ANU, law is a very tough degree to enter and stay in, which is probably why.

If you go to LaTrobe, Monash, Swinburne, UTS, UWS etc. then I'm sure there are quite a fair few Somalis studying law.

The reason why Somalis do not usually do law, even if they get into a very good university is that those smart Somalis would prefer medicine or engineering or finance degrees that have better job prospects and easier chances of scholarship. Also, the "law is haram" argument that aunties and uncles tell kids.

I chose Math so I can easily convert that into any of the fields I want and also work abroad. Law is just too specific and time consuming for me. I did love the idea of becoming a lawyer in the past though

I’ve noticed Somali Sijus in Kenya love studying Law. Somali’s in the west usually go for education, nursing, political science etc

My brother has two years left of law school, my parents were forcing him to be a engineer but the guy just kept fighting it. I have to be the one to fulfill my parents request now because of him.

I’m going into my third year and I’ve already gotten accepted to my major. Its not like I hate it, it’s fun sometimes and sometimes is really hard.
