Somalis shot dead by the Ethiopian army in Sitti

I was supposed to take a break from this site, but the development of the region have been deteriorating for the past days.

A couple of days ago, a large movement of Ethiopian army soldiers was seen by the locals heading to the 'disputed areas' in Western Sitti, on the main road between Garbo-Isse and Cundhufo. Simultaneously have Afar militias/forces (who captured and occupies the area since a couple of years back) retreating in recent time as well. While this in theory sound better than the status-quo, the last time ENDF was deployed there, Afar militias committed massacres right under their watch which caused 400+ deaths.

In any case, as a result of the conflicts that started 2017/2018, 3-5000 have died and (still until today) 400k+ displaced people. Very little have done for the community and the dire humanitarian situation is on the verge of catastrophe, with need of emergency intervention.



Because of the situation on the ground, Ugaaska beesha Cisse Mustafe Maxamed Ibrahim, spoke out a day ago and sent an appeal to all Somalis in the region. He emphasized that the conflict in Sitti is masterminded by the federal gov't, with clear collusion between all Afars attacks and ENDF involvements. He called for the locals to take to the street and protest.

Some of the protestors blocked the Dire Dawa-Djibouti road, especially around Ayshaca town.

A meeting was then arranged between army generals and some of the local community.


I don't know what happened next, but the talks broke down and the army started shooting live rounds. So far (today), 3 have died and at least 5-10 injured.

100%. Even the ugaas said, despite what the Afar militants/forces are doing; it’s a project orchestrated by the federal government.

Notice how Afars only succeeded in occupying Somali land, once they participated in the Tigray war.

They are in clear cahoot with the army in every step of the way.

Somali Region used to be a powerhouse few years ago I kept hearing about how the Somali Liyu were fighting deep in Bale region, now its Canfar and Oromo Liyu invading Liben, Sitti, Faafan etc.

Yep, the difference back then was that you had two ‘strongmen’ fighting wholeheartedly for their regions at any cost.

Both DDS-Oromia and DDS-Afar.

Now that he’s been removed, you have an unequal balance. Cagjar is hesitant to make any moves, but the other sides are bold enough to take any step they wishes.

Tigrayans had a hands off approach in the regions, as long as they had goons in place they didn't care much about what happened between them but PP is pro-Amxaar allies and Canfar were historically Amxaar alligned and the hate Amxaar have for Somalis will support any landgrab attempt by Oromos/Canfar to push Somalis East.

Totally agree.

The ugaas also mentioned that we need an urgent meeting between all clan elders and stakeholders of the region, to decide what to do about these aggressions. And the fate that awaits them, unless a unified response is given.

But the situation in Sitti is different from the rest of the border areas, in that you have direct/indirect presence or collaboration of the army/fed gov’t. Which is why they’ve overrun us quickly, once they started colliding with each other.

I’ve even heard that Cagjar have been told to stay away from there, and not send any troops there.

In end all order comes from Addis, and very little can technically be done to make any significant change.

Somali liyu Police commited Harsh Crimes against their fellow Somalis, They killed, stole live stock and even did cross border attacks.

Somali Admin of Abdi Illy was a Enemy to Somali people, he killed arrested and jailed innocent somali People.

Today you have the results of all those years of Mistreatment. Cagjar is a Sell out just like the clown before him.

Inshallah, this won’t be the end for us. We will stay strong and defiant against them, for as long as we can.

The problem with that mindset is that once you’re overrun, the ‘new’ de-facto borders becomes vulnerable for new attacks and invasions.

In Sitti alone, Garbo-Isse, Candhufo, Cadeyti was considered ‘disputed areas’ despite being 100% Somali.

What happened then? They took over, displaced the locals and even one of the three above-mentioned towns was heavily destructed.

The latest fightings took place 100-150km inside Sitti. Some even said 200km, but I can’t confirm it yet.

This proves that you can’t let them get closer to you, regardless of the cost we have to pay, human lives and private property alike
