Well i can't say for sure but it appears to be a shortening. There're a lot of people named abdi then one of the names of allah swt and somalis probably took the abdi part for convince. I didn't like the name for a long time but eventually i came to use it at times for convince cause of it's wide use amongst somalis. Abdul seems far fetched and quite unlikely.

It's defiantly not somali. Back in the days somalis specially these living in the capital city use to have foreign names as nicknames. I've seen somali men called hebel john.

There is nothing wrong with it. Somali also use magan which roughly or somewhat means the same thing. The name is now part of the somali culture.
