Some migrants are Somali, but some definitely are not. That’s not some outlandish conspiracy or cope it’s just the reality. We may not know the exact numbers, but it’s clear the figures are inflated.

What actually made me start realizing this was that Norwegian thread. An article mentioned how Somalis are underrepresented certain categories in Norway compared to how we're overrepresented in other European countries.

Turns out this discrepancy is largely due to Norway having the strictest asylum laws in Europe to the point that they even deport Somalis on suspicion of being from Djibouti.


As for the Somali side of tahrib, it's already declining, as I explained in another thread. The root of it comes from an education system misaligned with market demands, leaving many graduates unemployed. But the good news is they’ve recognized the issue and are now taking steps to correct it.

That video seems like satire, but it's pointing to a real issue: youth unemployment , not that the country is unlivable.

In this study in Puntland published last year, they identified the causes of unemployment and made recommendations and reforms:

So in Puntland much like in Somaliland to address this, several initiatives and schemes are in place or proposed. These focus on vocational training, entrepreneurship, and aligning education with market demands. These efforts aim to equip young people with the skills needed for employment and encourage self employment opportunities.



It actually has a proven track record as an employment vehicle. In some parts of Somalia, graduates have turned to entrepreneurship or vocational work to find employment:

But that’s really what Somali regions at large need is to tailor the educational system to meet market demand. So I’m not too worried it’s a solvable issue, and they’ve already begun taking steps in the right direction.

I wonder how many migrants claiming to be from Somalia are actually from neighboring East African countries trying to get in through claiming asylum. In Ireland, an investigation of a batch (63 people) of migrants claiming to be from Somalia showed that only 8 out of the 63 were actually Somali, 44 were from Tanzania, 6 from Kenya and one from each Ethiopia and Djibouti.

It's much better than what happened in Addis, where they essentially displaced and evicted a large number of people and businesses with little to no compensation during the construction of Bole Road, while relying heavily on foreign companies and contractors for the work.

This project, on the other hand, is integrated, community-oriented, and interconnected. It’s funded domestically by the Somali regional government under Mustafa and executed using local Somali contractors and companies.


This is how it looked like before when they started construction:

It’s genuinely encouraging to see this, because it shows that it is possible to fix the unplanned, haphazard urban buildout seen across many Somali region cities an issue caused by the rapid pace of private sector expansion.


Imagine transforming Hargeisa in a similar way judging by this, it would probably only take 2–3 years to do it.


Mogadishu, which holds the largest concentration of wealth, could do even more if the local government manages to expand its revenue collection. If they combine that with private partnerships.

I just finished going through the latest "National Transformation Plan (NTP) 2025-2029 Report", and I was pleasantly surprised to see that many of our ideas and criticisms have actually been acknowledged.


They explicitly recognize the data gaps, outdated fragementary data that we’ve often pointed out. That’s really encouraging because it means we may finally start getting reliable figures on Somalia’s economy and real GDP, something long overdue.

They also acknowledge that the private sector needs stronger public sector support.

Interestingly, they are planning to implement exactly what we’ve discussed in earlier parts of this thread, grants, tax incentives for registration, and licensing of businesses to accelerate formalization and broaden the tax base.

All in all, some very positive developments. The report outlines plans to create affordable housing for low-income groups and IDPs, including targets for how many units they’ll build. They also lay out strategies to make Somalia a climate-resilient country and touch on development across nearly every sector.

Just from skimming through, it honestly sounds very promising.

The National Transformation Plan 2029 sounds very promising, but if the issues of revenue and corruption aren't fixed in the next 2 years it will be a failure

My hope is that, with USAID and other external funding drying up, the government will be pressured into seriously pursuing domestic revenue sources.


To get citizens and businesses to comply with taxation, the government would have to become more transparent, responsive, and aligned with public needs which, in turn, could reduce corruption as accountability increases.


One key element that’s still missing, though, is meaningful youth political and civic engagement. It’s strange how the political landscape is still monopolized by the older generation, despite the country's overwhelmingly young population.

That's why i urge that there needs to be a youth civic movement.

What this means is that he is leading youth led political party to run for the 2026 elections.

I have no idea what immediate change this will have . But it looks promising enough and ecouraging to see that there are politically active youth in the country trying make a difference and this might encourage more Somali youth to become more actively involved in shaping their own future and rebuilding the fractured civic/national identity.

He is from the diaspora as well and returned to give back.

While the avg quality of education in somalia is probably higher due to children being educated in their native language. 30-40 of children are still not enrolled in schools. There also don't seemed to be standardized somali textbooks at all

This is where the oil money would change everything. Since these kinds of public goods require billions in investment. The oil money would allows us to not take billions in debt that countries in africa did to invest in education and public infrastructure.

No he is right the language of instruction in the primary schools across the country is in Somali, its only in the secondary onwards that English becomes the medium of instruction. So children are taught to read and write in Af-Soomaali first.

The misleading figure of 30-40% of kids being out of school has to do with the number displaced from the south due the floods they put at anywhere between 3-4 million , they love to extrapolate this while hiding that context that it's not linked to any structural reality of Somalia where most people have access to education and attend it.

But the fact their native language is the medium of instruction across most schools is why the literacy rate for Somali youth is 77%. It wouldn't be this high if they were taught a foreign language in the beginning.
