I'm really affectionate with my hooyo and aabo. But with my siblings, not really. Sometimes we hug but that's about it.

Somalis aren't as affectionate as reer xamar, and arabs.

It's still feels weird to me when my arab friends say habibi I love you (in a brotherly way) and a lot of emotional stuff that's completely alien to me.

It's also somewhat shameful in our culture for a man to show any emotions. I've seen videos of Arab men crying, but you'd rarely find a Somali man crying.

Somalis rarely hug, and only kiss when a person is on their death bed or hasn't been seen for many months/years. Saying I love you is very rare to hear except if you're under 5 years old or your dying.

I kiss both of my parents on the cheek and hug them. Not only on special occasions but quite often actually. I remember that when I was young I was the only one at home who kissed her parents (father on the cheek) good night (only girl).

I only hug my siblings when I haven’t seen them for a while or when one of them is leaving for a holiday or whatever.

Alhamdulilaah growing up my parents were very affectionate. In shaa Allah when I have my own family I want to be like them as well. It’s so important to show and tell your family that you love them and that it isn’t ceeb to express your feelings. Even now that I’m older my parents still tell me that they love me and the other way around.
