I don’t think so.

First, most Somalis are tribal and they will defend and shield their brethren from anyone even if they will bomb half of the population of Mogadishu. Secondly, poverty is so widespread that Al-Shabab implements a tactic of carrots and sticks, threats of violence along with bribery renders them the assistance of most residents. Thirdly, illiteracy is so high, alshabab’s ideology rhymes with a large section of society. Fourthly, most of the civilians don’t consider the federal government representing their interests as it is plagued with corruption and infighting. Therefore, they view to have no investment in risking their lives and saving the Federal government. Fifthly, the lack of establishing a unified army which is representative of all the clans led to the establishment of clan militias masquerading as the national army that other clans see it as imposed on them and resent it.

In conclusion, these factors and others will make Al-Shabab succeed in their bombing campaign in southern Somalia and particularly, Mogadishu.
